Bendall & Sons - Solicitors, Suffolk

Has anyone had any dealings with Bendall & Sons - solicitors, who have offices in Mildenhall and Newmarket in Suffolk? We are having a lot of trouble with this firm and I'm sure we can't be the only ones. I'd love to hear from anyone else who has had problems with them - or even had a good service!

Never heard of them, but this is a public forum so be careful on what you say!

Well, I hope I have kept my query fairly broad and not gone into the specifics of our problems, I have also offered people the chance to report good service. I did wonder about posting it but I though it would be all right just to ask for other people's experiences?

Why? As long as its the truth theres not really any reason to be careful.

Funny you should post that as I was just discussing this with OH who wants to err on the side of caution but I said that we have documentary proof of their "misdemeanours" so we have nothing to fear. All I am trying to do is to see if there is anyone else who has had similar problems so that we can compare notes and perhaps share ideas on the best way forward.

Nothing wrong with commenting on the quality of a service, whether they're solicitors or not. It's called consumer opinion.

Because truth and justice are not the same thing. Just because you know something to be true does not make it provable. Solicitors know more about libel than others. It is better to err on caution than to possibly leave yourself open to counter attack. The OP has not said anything wrong so far, and indeed sensibly has not stated anything much other than they have an issue. Once the OP has a few replies, they would be better to discuss on a non public forum.

Could you give me some pointers to non public forums where I could raise this? I would really appreciate any help, I am very keen to contact other people who may have had problems with these solicitors but I don't really know where to start - hence my post here. It is a small business so I know it is unlikely that any on this forum has used them but I thought it was worth a try. I would be grateful for any pointers of more appropriate places. Thanks.

You're fine to discuss here agnes, maybe someone experiencing similar issues will find this thread by searching the net

I'm assuming by your tags you've already looked into sra.org.uk/con…age and legalombudsman.org.uk/ ?

Why not give us some idea's of what its about - without going into specifics if you are worried about anything

If there really not doing there job properly then contact the Law Society and make a complaint. We were in that situation and it moved things on for us.

Put in a similar request in other forums MSE for example. This will widen your net considerably. You can either have a discussion by email or set up your own private chat board (some technical ability required but software is free). Remember that not every one that replies is going to be genuine - I could be Mr Bendall's sister, masquerading as a father in Aberdeen

Thanks for the the suggestions. We have been down the Legal Ombudsman route. To be honest we weren't that impressed by them, we had a very junior person who had to refer everything to her supervisor so each query took ages. We thought that a resolution had been reached about 3 weeks ago but now the problems have started again. So we contacted the LO but were told that as we had agreed to the resolution the case was now closed! We said that surely if they are not keeping to the resolution then we need to re-open it, our person is referring this to her supervisor but hasn't yet got back to us....
I have become so frustrated with the lack of progress that I thought I would come on here to see if other people have had problems with them. I hadn't thought of MSE, I will post on there too - thanks.
I also didn't realise that we could still complain to the SRA - I thought we had to go through the LO now. I think we will give the LO one more chance to sort this and then refer the individual partner to the SRA.
I have had a look on the Law Society pages gavjbrown but I can find a link to making a complaint - could you tell me how you did it please...if it was a while ago I suspect this may have now gone and we have to use the LO.

Our complaint is very long and complicated but basically boils down to the fact that we were lied to about work they claimed had been done and had not been done - fortunately for us they were stupid enough to put these lies in writing!

Thanks for this - I will contact them. I have also found several sites where you can review solicitors (a bit like trip advisor but for legal firms!) so I'll use them too.

What kind of work did they undertake for you?

It is wills and probate work. They were the executors for both my parents and for the last 2 years we have been having a constant battle with them to get the estates settled. They have deliberately and repeatedly mislead us and we still have no idea when the work will be completed.

Probate is something that really can take that long but there is no reason why they should mislead you. As JB has already pointed out, you ought to raise this with the Solicitors Regulation Authority and whilst the SRA are a bit of a nuisance to anyone working in the legal profession they do a great job ensuring the solicitors make everything clear to their clients. If they find anyone working outside of the Code of Conduct there will be severe ramifications. We get audited by them all the time and they are very thorough.

Thanks Magicjay1986 - I had thought that because we had gone via the Legal Ombudsman we couldn't go directly to the SRA - that the LO would do that if they felt it necessary. I think that we will contact the LO again on Monday to see if they are going to re-open the case and if they are not then we will go to the SRA.
