i was thinking of going with virgin broadband from bt as they were cheaper but i am in a non cable region. does this mean that they would force me to take phone package too, as i only want virgin for their broadband

It depends how far from exchange you are and what service you want. If you want very fast and you are less than 1 mile from your exchange look at the Be unlimited options, its "up to" 24 mbps. Yeah you wont get that, perhaps 12 but max price is £22 and there are cheaper deals for less speed/download.

For ordinary connections I find ADSL24 fantastic. I changed from Tiscali (and previously BT) as it was really slow in the evenings and they were blocking stuff. I now get 8 mbps, actual throughput, can watch films live over the internet and their support is UK, they speak english and are helpful etc.

Best service I've ever had.

Various deals from £13.00, mines the £19.99, but then I download a lot for work.

If I were you I'd avoid

Tiscali
Orange
Freeserve
Virgin (unless cabled)
Sky

they all use traffic shaping which means you get **** throughput when you want it and they block loads of ports (and then deny it)

BT are OK but expensive.

Dont use Virgin media, they absolutely ****, haven't had there service for about 7-8 months and they still think were using there services!!

I use Virgin Media's 20MB cable service and it's flawless. Yes they apply traffic shaping to heavy users (myself included sometimes) but it's never affected me very badly.

just tried be and im told im too far away from my bt exchange.

what id like is
unlimited downloads
speed higher than 512kb that i have now
for cheaper that what bt is charging me = £21 a month

sky are quite rubbish. a couple of months ago, i was downloading at 1.66mB/s, and now, 20kB/s

Go to entanet (ADSL24 is an Entanet reseller). To make a really informed choice, go read the forums over on www.thinkbroadband.com

Their forums are here: bbs.adslguide.org.uk/

I have just signed up with the Post Office. I could not find any reviews as the service is new, I am £26 per month but that is for phone rental etc aswell, you can sign up for just broadband, take a look at their website (you can get quidco too)

It is going to be switched over on 2nd January I will keep you posted!

Rubbish customer relations, but their 8MB internet has always been pretty decent for me.
