    Hiya mate!
Not sure about best creepy horror, but I believe the Remastered version of The Fifth Element is realy good - make sure it's the remastered though as the original HD release was carp!
I'm pretty sure you will see a difference, btw you may find the picture is better setting it to 720p instead of 1080i - some do & some don't!

why is that mate? when 720p should be less of a resolution

Something to do with 720p = Progressive and 1080i = Interlaced.

I don't know exactly what that means, but know that I've always been told progressive scan is better than interlaced, especially on moving images, even if it means a drop in resolution.

    sunshine, looks stunning in hd

how do you change the settings on the PS3 to 720p or 1080i

    Hi guys,
Can you answer me something as i'm someone who is not into all the hi tech stuff. I've just bought a hd Sony Bravia and have ordered a PS3. You mentioned a HDMI cable. Is this something I need to buy on top of the tv and PS3??

    Original Poster

Yes you need to buy this seperatly, you dont get one with the ps3
buy a good one as it sends the signal better...or so ive been told lol my one was about £30

Sony bravia > PS3 > good HDMI cable = very good picture indeed

Yea, if you want to get the most out of it...

The PS3 generally just comes with a composite cable (you know, the one with the red, yellow and white inputs), which will not give you a High Definition picture.

If you have a Sony Bravia, you will want an HDMI cable.

Don't be paying a lot of money for one, though.... You can get decent ones for very little cost.

It's one of the options in the display settings

I believe the difference is basically:
720p is 720 lines every time the picture refreshs; 1080i is 2 lots of 540 lines alternating with every other refresh.....
It's all down to personal opinion though - for many there is very little noticable difference until you get up to massive screens of 50" and over.

just an abundance of usefull information on here lol

    thanks everyone

Most the blu-rays I've got / watched look excellent compared to DVD / TV, but some do have added 'grain' in them, for atmosphere, I think? One is 300, which I think looks awesome, but it is grainy too...

The worst film on Blu-ray I've seen was goodfellas - even had camera burns and stuff in it! Looked like I was watching a VHS!

Ones that I've thought were stunning in parts were Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix; Spiderman Trilogy; and Planet Earth (although not a movie).

You'd be better just choosing a film you want to see, than renting something just because the picture is supposed to be good, though...

Hodsey / Saxo - did you manage to get your Broadband issues sorted?

The price of the HDMI cable does not make a difference to the quality of picture. A cheap HDMI cable will produce the same picture as a £100 one.

If you think about it all the cable is doing is sending Audio and Video data in the form of 0's and 1's (albeit more complex than this) so as long as they reach the other end of the cable it makes no bearing on the picture quality.

The only time quality comes into play is how long the cable itself may actually last. I bought 2 hdmi leads for £8! Also the quality of your speakers will matter coz my R88 Samsung TV doesn't exactly have the best speakers.

BTW have you tried the LoveFilm 3 months free trial? They have a massive collection of Blu-Rays you can rent and all for free!!! Thats what I do! Then come back here 3 months later and tell us which films you thought looked the best and you won't have spent a penny!

Absolutely true! I got a £2.99 HDMI cable feed off both my blu ray player and hd dvd player and the picture is stunning. Tried my mate's £89.99 cable and there's no difference whatsoever on a 50" plasma screen.

I know you want creepy films but at the other end of the scale try Disney's Ratatouille, the picture and sound are just awesome and will really show off your setup!

Oh yea, Ratatouille looks amazing!! Cars does too actually... I wouldn't have thought animations could look any better, but they really do look awesome in Blu-ray!

    Thanks so much guys.
I don't know what i'd do without this site, I 'm on here every day reading up on stuff.

Thing is, sometimes there are people on here whose understanding of the hi tech stuff is so great that if you ask a basic question, they make you feel as thick as s**t!

    Rep left. Thanks again;-)
May try that lovefilm thing! Sounds good.

Karen - I always try and help those that need it when it comes to 'techy stuff' - hopefully Saxo and Hodsey will vouch for that - If you ever need any help / info please feel free to pm!

Ok, ok, now i'm gonna do this 'silly question' thing so bare with me....

Yea, can vouch for that - there are some really helpful people on here...

Incidentally, I've just been on the phone to sky about my TV package, and they said to me "By the way, how is your Sky Broadband? And problems?" - looks like it might be a common fault!

i believe 1.3 compliant means that the cable also carries the raw datastream for the DD+ audio signal - which is the super - duper Dolby Digital audio track

Its the latest version of the HDMI cable. (think its 1.3b now). Basically it allows for richer/deeper colours and better sound quality. It is backwards compatible so using a 1.3 hdmi cable will work on your PS3 but whether or not it will utilise these 'extra capabilites' will be dependant on your HD TV's specification.

Most HDTV's don't yet support full 1.3 features (i.e. the higher-bit colour ranges) but the cable will still work fine and produce excellent HD quality.

By the way, they have HDMI cables on offer in Aldi this week for only £4.99... I've got two (a cheap one, and a monster (expensive!) one), and I can see little difference (if any!)

Once again.....thanks. I am trying to learn about these things:oops:

OK. First the difference between i and p or interlaced and progressive:

Interlaced means with every refresh/pass of the screen every other line is refreshed. So first the odd lines then on the second pass the even lines. This means that with every frame displayed, every other line is a split second out of date...this makes action scenes/scene with a lot of movement look a bit **** Progressive does every single line with every pass.

Onto the movies to rent. Id recommend grabbing a cg movie first of all, maybe ratatouille, pixar shorts, ice age, cars...these in particular look STUNNING. Planet earth or gallapagos looks amazing, tho planet earth imo is all over the scale in terms of visual quality. 300 looks pretty stunning too as long as you dont mind its grainy stylised look. Scanner darkly, die hard 4, 3:10 to yuma, mission impossible 3 etc all look good.

The following is a really good site for bluray reviews, including individual ratings for the film, picture and audio quailty bluray.highdefdigest.com/rev…tml
