the pharmacy told me the other day they have stopped selling anything for under 6s with a chesty cough

medised is great but they wont sell it to you now if you tell them the child is under 6!

Swan's blood. My parent's used to swear by it when we were kids. Has to be warm and fresh though, don't use the bottled stuff

+1 cough medicines are no longer suitable for children under 6, they really dont do much good anyway, please dont give your child anything it will go away on its own,

    Hippies.

There's nothing wrong with giving kids a bit of medicine. Unless of course you read the Daily Express or Daily Mail. In which case, your kids are doomed anyway.

please read these before making up your mind nothing like this should be given to your child especially as they are under 2! quoted from the website above "Parents abusing antibiotics and cough and cold medicine when it comes to their children are a big concern. Is it a quick fix because life is too busy to have sick children?" let your child sweat it out will built up their immunity

thanks for all the info. i am now more confused!. just will stick with the tixylix i am using

If your doctor gave you antibiotics, I'd give them. Our 10 month old has had a bad cough etc for 4 months now, and they said it doesn't warrant antibiotics - so if they've prescribed them, I'd give them.

For coughs etc to relieve the symptoms, we use a vapouriser (plug-in device that releases menthol etc) and some Vicks rubbed onto his back.

There are a few recommendations on here that aren't suitable for your 11 month old - so beware.

all I could give my 3 year old during her recent bout of swine flu was an over the counter cough syrup with nothing in it, i also gave her honey, calpol, rubbed vic on her & sprinkled albas oil in her room .
like others have been saying they have changed the rules regarding cough medicine, i still had some from a while ago in the cupboards which stated suitable from 6 months but have had to throw it away

I think if the doctor has prescribed anti biotics it is best to give them x

Antibiotics are given too freely by doctors, and in most cases aren't what is needed.

Doctors don't always know what is best to give, and in some cases they actually get a bonus for the amount of antibiotics they prescribe. Coughs don't tend to be bacterial, so antibiotics are useless against it.

The active ingredient in many cough mixes is Liquoice. So that would be my advice. Oh and honey mixed with a little lemon juice and some hot water, and cooled will probs work better than most over the counter crap anyways

I would rather give honey to a child than a bunch of chemicals which probably wont work.

+1 we use honey and the babies in our family are stong and healthy

my folks used honey on me, and I have only had antibiotics once in my life, and that was because my eye ball was bleeding, after having a major coughing fit on nye. Apart from being on Thyroxine, I am a herbal all the way kinda girl.

doctor said only use the antibiotics if you really have to. have to trust her really as she is one of the most highly rated docs in the county and i have to say i'd agree. sticking with tixylix and bit of honey, i wouldn't believe not giving honey to under 1 year olds. totally natural so ok by me.

well thats up to you but there is a bacteria present in honey that could make your baby very ill, not worth the risk IMO, I did infact hear something in the news recently about a baby that had this not sure if the baby was ok though

'Don't give honey to your baby until he or she is one year old. This is because, very occasionally, honey can contain a type of bacteria that can produce toxins in a baby's intestines. This can cause serious illness (infant botulism). After a baby is a year old, the intestine has matured and the bacteria can't grow'
