    Best Defrag Freeware/Shareware?

Does anybody have any recommendations for defrag programs? I can't imagine the inbuilt XP program is really up to speed these days.

Naturally I tried Googling but there are an obscene number out there and I'd rather not spend my entire evening researching something quite so dull

    Thanks in advance...

I was wondering the same thing the other day. Surely the XP one does the job just fine?

There are all sorts making bold claims though such as on-the-fly defrag. Somewhat similar to what OSX does on my Mac.

Inbuilt in XP has always worked fine for me (although a little slow) could always try here....

    Volume Fragmentation
    Total Fragmentation = 23%
    File Fragmentation = 46%
    Free space Fragmentation = 0%

How does that sound? Windows always tells me I need to defrag, even after I defrag...

 uh oh... I'm gonna get flamed *runs*

Nah, I don't flame. I just don't like their "you can't watch videos or view photos on a PC" and their "Macs never crash" style of advertising.

Oh, and how sometimes programs simply don't load and you have to re-start the machine for it to work.

Mark Russinovich (a highly respected tech guy who revealed the Sony rootkit scam, and has since been headhunted by Microsoft) came up with Contig - a very nice defrag utility that is only 55kb and does a much better job than the Windows in built defragmenter. You can download it here:
    microsoft.com/tec…spx

However, it is a command line interface, so if you are not comfortable with typing in DOS commands, you can get a graphical interface for it here:
    softpedia.com/rev…tml

Avoid bloated programs that claim to perform "on-the-fly" defragmentation. They will invariably just slow down your computer. Just run contig once every couple of weeks and you'll be fine.

    Isn't poppy a gurl? :? lol

Sounds good, thx. I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing DOS again. Ahh the memories I have to agree I was rather skeptical about an on-the-fly prog being able to function without hogging system resources.
