Best external hard drive?

18
Found 16th Apr 2010
Hey guys/gals/the inbetween,

I'm after an external hard drive. Doesn't need to be bigger than 200GB really - so I'm looking for the cheapest deal going.

I want something that's just USB powered - if such a device exists? Otherwise mains powered will have to do.

Thanks in advance.

You could get the MJ branded 500GB Samsung drive for £55 from Amazon. I know it's bigger than you wanted, but... It is solely USB powered and if you're an MJ fan, is a great deal!

Or try the the deal at top of the hottest for today although its bigger again hotukdeals.com/ite…1tb but £53.82 for 1TB

Buy a 2.5 enclosure and make your own after finding a cheap smaller 2.5 hdd if still possible.

thats got to have external power as well.

if it says its "portable", 99.9% of the time it will only require one USB cable to connect it up. BUT they are more expensive.

Amazon, ebuyer and play.com are where i would look

link?

2.5" drives above 50 GB usually require more than 500mA to power them. one USB socket will output 500mA max.

What ? you on about :lol external caddies are about £8

anyways 1 usb port will provided enough on most systems to run a 2.5 usb device which is why the drives you recommended will chances are only come with a single usb cable (it might not be split in to 2 eg for extra power )

^ and nor will the device need it which is one of the rerason why 2.5 drives are more popular as a portable option over 3.5 which will 99% need power.

external caddies are cheap yes, but 2.5" drives are expensive, especially at that capacity. great if you have one lying around.

each USB port can supply 0.5A (500mA). no more. physically impossible on a standard port.

i have a 50GB 2.5" SATA drive in a caddy, and it sometimes suffers when writing a lot of data as it only has one USB cable. the drive trys to consume more than 500mA and messes up a bit. (i checked how much it was drawing under load)

Get rid it's a bad design caddy or broken or your pc usb is dodgy. Look at specs for liteon slim dvd writer eTAU108 it needs 1.5a to power on 5v DC yet on lots of systems no problem using the supplied single USB cable to power and tx/rx data.

Not disagreeing about the max output of usb pinouts.ru/Slo…tml I know what it is given I must have over 100 usb devices I use on a regular basis like external 5.25 caddies for writers etc.

I'm sure I said that in first post or eluded to it.

Pop into your local Aldi, Lidl see if these have one on offer as prices are quite bad at minute for a 2.5. Cheap for 1tb 3.5, 500gb 3.5 externals.
