    Best free anti-virus programme?

Currently got AVG installed but recently got a virus. Was wandering if AVG is the best or are there better alternatives?

AVG has gone to pot, dump it

    get Microsoft security essentials

    Avast or Microsoft Security essentials.

Be sure to install a Firewall as well (such as Comodo) and it's worth having anti malware such as MalwareBytes and/or anti spyware such as SpyBot.

All can be found on FileHippo.com

*edit* I told myself after the last time I posted in an AV thread I would never post again, as it is always overlooked. Bah

I use AVG. I have never had a virus on my PC so can't say if it is good or not. Microsoft Security Essentials seems ok though, I tried it out on another computer and liked the look of it.

    It will turn off automatically

Whatever Firewall you choose run it through ShieldUp to make sure it works.

AVG seems to be the most popular but it is by no means the best. My brother was running it and was hit by a really bad virus which I just couldn't get rid of. We had to reformat in the end cos it was just replicating itself after every scan of the computer.

Since then, I've stopped recommending AVG as it didn't pick it up until it was too late. I would recommend paying literally a few quid for Kaspersky off eBay - there are powersellers selling off the old 2009 for about a fiver. I really like Kaspersky and would recommend it to anyone looking to pay for an anti-virus.

I am hearing good things about Microsoft Security Essentials so will try that when my Kaspersky subscription expires. When trying to disinfect my brother's computer I used the Avira rescue CD which I quite liked, so their free version might be worth a look.
Whatever you do, don't bother with AVG.

Are you sure it was a virus?

Many dodgy programs that get installed are actually spyware or malware, and AVG does not look for spyware/malware, it looks for viruses (mostly).

You need malwarebytes or spybot to look for spyware/malware.

    Get Avira mate

If you can't get Kaspersky Internet Security for free (have to be a Barclays Online Banking customer), then ]Panda Cloud Antivirus is the best you can have for nothing right now.

Avira's UI is horrible. Use microsoft security essentials. Very low resource and easy to use. AVG is useless

anything but AVG. Love it how people say they have this crap and havent got a virus only to find one on their PC when they try a better product!

    KASPERSKY FTW!
