Hi, just got a new laptop and need some advice on internet security. currently using avg, is there any other better ones that protect you online when using online banking, i know there is software IBM Trusteer Rapport for free. any recommendation. would like something that dose not hog the system and runs fairly lite in the background avg does. is there a free one that does both anitvirus and secure browsing.

yes so have I but I don't think its works for online banking?

as far as I'm aware f u use the rapport software if offered by ur bank then if something goes wrong they cover it or isn't that the case.

Sophos Home is free and pretty good. Otherwise you can have a look at what scored well on AVTest: av-test.org/en/…ws/

bitdefender

Have used Avast! free anti-virus for at least 15 years. Never had a problem (I'm pretty PC savvy and careful anyway) and it always gets good reviews. I also use ZoneAlarm free for my firewall as it gives the user a lot of control.

I used to use it until they got rid of the American babe's announcements.
Now, I use boring Mcafee, which has been provided for free by my bank

If your new laptop is Windows 10 (you don't say) then this comes with Windows Defender security already built in and is adequate for most people.

Note IBM Trusteer Rapport is NOT an anti virus product.

What it mainly does is warn you when you type your bank logon details into a non-bank (or fake) banking website.

So for example if you logon to your bank web site with an account number of 4567890 then if at some later date you logon to another web site using 4567890 then it will warn you that this is NOT your bank web site.

So it mainly spots phishing attacks that provide links in email to "fake" banking web sites. It does NOT run anti virus programs.

Many years ago I made a suggestion to the Government that all UK financial instutions use an exclusive internet domain (eg .bank.uk), which should be a pretty simple solution to preventing most phishing attacks. Instead, we have software trying to guess when you're being scammed...

I've been using Avira for well over 7 or 8 years. Never had the need to download anything special for online banking.
