Just got myself a webcam and would like to use it for instant messaging. What messenger service would you recommend/avoid ? I tried skype out, but you cant appear to use the webcam whilst typing.

I just use MSN messenger, simple, free and the most used messenger in the UK.

Yea use MSN. It is the most popular in the UK, free and alot of people have it. It is also quite good aswell.

Yea you definatly can, you can also use a microphone to talk with so you dont have to type.

Another vote for MSN, seems to generally work fine with webcams and it does allow you to type with the webcam active. Only issue I've had with it is occasionally the cam aspect won't work behind a shared connection (such as a router) and it won't always see a capture card with a camera hooked up to it as a valid source.

Yeah, as long as you aren't in Mac in which case the built in Mac camera won't work.

As for MSN, most people have it already and unfortunately with things like instant messaging and social networking sites you have to move with the crowd...

skype is another, i have to use skype to keep in touch with a friend in greece as every time i try and use msn with her it crashes my computer so gave up on msn with her, must say skype seems alot clearer than msn

A vote for messenger from me....I have found it reliable, consistent and easy to use.

i've used msn, yahoo, etc but had too many applications open. now i use Adium messenger (for mac only) - it's free to download and i just add my yahoo, msn, aol, google, etc accounts.

i have skype as separate and use it if i need to call//webcam someone overseas.

thanks to all, think I'll give MSN a go

I used to use MSN all the time but only use skype now. You can use webcam whilst in a message box, you simply need to change the settings via tools>options and video settings and enable video, also whilst in a chat with cam you can select whether the video is full screen, attached or in a seperate window.
