Hi all,

This is my first post, so apologies if I've put this in the wrong forum!

I've decided on getting a 17 inch laptop as a replacement for my ailing desktop, and am looking for something in the region of £450 - £650. So far, I'm inclined towards the Sony VAIO VGN-AR71J, but I'd be really grateful for any recommendations.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Carter

actually, i'm looking for the same, any advice appreciated

If you dont mind a slightly used laptop then I have a lovely Acer Aspire 8920G - 2GHz - 4gb ram - 350Hd - 18.4"screen - full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080)- Bluray - HDMI out - all boxed as new for £600. Me and my wife wife went mad last month buying big laptops but have decided to go for smaller ones. Too big for us.

Let me know if any one is interested and I will list it in the FS section.

Kind regards,
Zish

I have the Sony AR21S (same chassis).

This laptop is absolutely huge. The dimensions listed do not prepare you for the sheer size and weight, I doesn't fit in normal laptop carry cases, so I had to get the Official Sony one (£70).

Do not get this laptop if you ever want to move it around. The battery lasts for less than an hour under normal use. The only reason to get this machine is if you need the 1920 x 1080 screen which the AR71J doesn't have.
In my opinion, unless you get the top of the line Bluray model of the AR series, and intend on watching films, there are more portable, cheaper laptops with asimilar or better screen resolution than the AR71J

Depends on what you want to do with it but after my m8s experience with a Rock lappy he bought last year i would't bother getting a lappy that has a 1920 panel, its too much for the cpu etc to handle and ends up very slow or looks kak, in games especially

About the only problem a modern computer should have with 1920x1200 is in games, I'm running that resolution on an Athlon XP 2700+ with no problems.

Of course, you may have trouble reading anything when it's squeezed into a 17" screen as it's generally used for 24" desktop monitors.

I bought this laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-AR71J) for £649 from the Sony centre two weeks ago and I agree that it's huge! I also have a 15.4" Vaio and to be honest, a 15.4" screen is big enough. An extra two inches really makes a difference. I have problems trying to find space to place this laptop somewhere!

It's an excellent laptop though and very powerful. It comes with a lot of pre-installed junk but I have uninstalled most of it. It's an entertainment laptop.
