The OH has indicated wanting a Netbook as a pressie ... need to get this by mid Feb.

I hope all you clever people can suggest which is the best Netbook (best value in terms of quality, price, portability, robustness, reliable) in the market today.

These are the minimum basic requirements:
1. Runs MS Office or OpenOffice / Needs MS Word
2. Web browser / not a heavy video user but decent enough for youtube, facebook, bbc iplayer the usual.
3. Wifi
4. USB2 input(s)
5. Runs iTunes (for ipod)

Rep for useful advice given, thanks!

PS: I should also mention I've been a Mac user for awhile so have lost touch wrt to processors and chips eg Celeron/Inspiron etc.

Let me start by adding this ]link, except it's dated 2009.

1. Samsung NC10

2. Dell Mini 10

3. ASUS EEEPC 1000HE

4. Acer Aspire One

5. MSI Wind

I have the NC10 and am very happy with it.
As to Office, download the Beta of Office 2010.

I bought my Daughter the Samsung NC10 and it's brilliant and such good value for what you get. It also has bluetooth so you can send anything you have on your phone to the pc in no time at all.

Carphone Warehouse were recently selling the Compaq Mini 100 or something, for £179.

1gb RAM - 160gb HD, 10" screen - Win XP

Not sure if it's still running though.

I know that you can pick up an HP mininote for next to nothing (£140) but i doubt that it will have the processing power you need.

hope this helps.

[FONT=Verdana]Do you have a budget in mind for purchasing a netbook, as there are several deals listed on HUKDs - the Compaq Mini 110c Netbook deal, via Carphone Warehouse, is still available instore (out of stock online) but the price is meant to be going back up soon.

BTW what operating system do you want running on it? Older models are coming bundled with Windows XP Home Edition, whilst newer ones are coming bundled with Windows 7 Starter Edition - there also models coming bundled with Windows Vista Basic Edition i.e. Acer Aspire One 751, with 2GB of RAM & 250GB hard disk (on Amazon UK).

hi scotty boy,

i saw the out-of-stock but hope it will be back. looks like the deal ... next step is getting the OH touch and feel which one. i thought the mini dell looked quite candy-licious but they're a little pricey. i saw most prices are about £250 mark, but any good savings (better, faster, cheaper) would be great.

the OH really only needs it to do wordprocessing, check work emails (pdfs, links), sometimes watch videos (youtube), log on to facebook that sort of thing. and able to carry it around (rides a motorbike) in bag without worrying it will break after 2 weeks. oh and fast enough machine.

OS: tbh i have no idea which one, home edition i'd guess nothing too fancy. sorry i sound a little vague but only because i use macs. the OH is not a geek just nothing that crashes often or problems with virus or updating every time you log on. where can i find out quick reliable info about these different OS and their specs? what would be a minimum requirement to run fast internet? no big graphics, no online gaming.

thanks in advance.

[FONT=Verdana]If you have a local Carphone Warehouse store nearby, there's bound to be stock within it as it's only the main storage depot which has run out of stock for that model.

I'll see if I can put together a list of deals here on HUKD for you, to give you some ideas about various options - agree it would be a good idea to takeyour OH into local PC World, Curries, Comet or Carphone Warehouse stores to get hands-on experience of the netbooks out there.

[FONT=Verdana]For the battery runtime yes (comes with a six cell battery) but the screen resolution is a lot less (despite it having a 10" screen) and it will reduce what can be displayed via the onboard screen (it's noticeable from all accounts).

[FONT=Verdana]Update - Yes it is a good deal, as it appears the screen resolution is actually 1024x600 from what I can see but also I've posted on eBuyer's website to confirm that.

If you look at that specific deal thread I've already started looking into that one further and clarifying details for other members as well.
