I think autotrader automatically mark cars cat C or Cat D don't they?

Personally I wouldn't touch either, cat D has never worried me too much, but just had one written off as cat D.

They said it was clearly a write off so didn't look at the damage in a lot of detail, the chassis could be damaged or bent...

Incorrect. Cat D will never be structural damage to a car ie chassis or suspension. Most cat D vehicles are panel damage only or where it is older car and new manufacturer panels replacements will exceed value

Chassis damage is a cat C in any independent engineers assessment

    thats what he's said

The difference between Cat C and Cat D is all down to perceived cost in comparison to vehicle value, not structural v non structural damage.

    Category C
The vehicle is repairable but the costs exceed the vehicle’s value.

    Category D
The vehicle is repairable but repair costs are significant compared to the vehicle value – including time delays to source parts.

search Google, but do compare what the search is for. alot of people can do it online or on the phone while you are viewing the car . for the moment, check the car out , if you like it then do a check. the free ones don't show everything up unlike the £5 ones which do etc.
make sure it's not on finance too, because that would just mean you will loose your money. comapre the vin numbers with the history books and log book/car.

I buy nine form auction now

I have done from here from mobile f £3
