Best place to buy good quality sofas that aren't too expensive?

What have your experiences of different sofa retailers been like? I know DFS are rubbish. I don't know much about any others.

If you give a price range you're looking for it might help as I know IKEA have some beautiful sofas from £190+ but around the £300 mark are their more sturdier sofas ikea.com/gb/…61/

    i can highly recommend, saxonleather.co.uk

a second hand leather sofa from Gumtree with character usually 150 ish

Thanks for the replies guys. Not really looking for leather though. Price range about £500-800 for a 3-seater but depends on quality really.

We have am Argos 2 seater leather sofa (it came with the wife!) it must be 9 years old now and still doing ok...

Our dfs sofas are fine. good quality and within your budget. Try them out. Look at signs if quality on the sofas as you can tell which ones will last and which one's won't generally.

I heard Deeky had a nice leather Sofa that he purchased from some quality pre-owned Italian leather dealer or something. You might want to try one of those, most peeps reckon the quality is that good it reminded them of a 70's porn set. oO

If you have a Sofa Works nearby, worth a look. Sales people are not on commission so no hard sell. Prices are keen and they have various quality sofas. Find what you like then see if there is a discounted one on their website under the OUTLET tab.

I can only second the Argos comment, never had a problem with the ones I have had over the past

Bought a 3 piece suite from World of Leather just after my daughter was born and its still fine. Daughter now nearly 19 X)

Think they went the same way as MFI though

I agree with buying one from argos. got my leather couches from their 3 years ago
and their still going strong and looking good.

I agree Sofa works as i know someone who works there and yeah no commission , unlike dfs who pounce on you as soon as you walk through the door .

Thanks, I haven't tried them, turns out there's one fairly near to me too. Thanks for the tip about the outlet as well.

Try next clearance or their clearance clearance shop called choice discount (both have websites with store locators) The stock changes frequently but if you pop in a few times you'll probably find something and they are usually heavily discounted, sometimes with the furniture still selling full price on the main website, much like the marks and spencers outlet.

Might be worth seeing what happens in the sales too. Also, checkmout sales of display furniuture at stores which might be above budget. I got an immaculate bedroom set from John Lewis for two thirds of the retail price. Lasted longer than I care to recall.

DFS are not rubbish, I'd rather buy one from them than argos or ikea personally.

I had mine at SCS, from what i remember they were reasonable but i didn't look at material ones.

I had mine from DFS, there were supposed to be 10 legs for my sofa and only 4 were delivered. We waited three weeks for the other 6 legs to be delivered and when they arrived, they were of course a completely different colour. We then had to take a photo and email it to DFS to prove that they actually were different colours. That was about 5 weeks ago and we've heard nothing since.

However, I've never seen a cushion chopping demonstration before and the sofa is actually really nice.

Beware as they may try and add in the extras into the price without telling you, they did try that with me but I had seen it on Watchdog previously.

Please tell us your experience OP as to why DFS sofas are rubbish.

Make of this what you will, I was told by someone in the trade to look out for Uk made sofas. Most of the shops named above stock some and they tend to be a little more expensive, but are much better constructed and filled than the stuff produced in the Far East.

I went to the one in Slough the other week - I wasn't pressured at DFS, in fact when the guy said the special price was only for the one on display, and I expressed my doubts he left me to think about it and didn't bother me again.

It was too laid back at Sofa works, you can't get someone to assist you as they can't be bothered, and the quality at Sofa works sofas were poor. I would have bought from Harveys but the only one I liked was too large to get through the lounge door (smaller than normal :-(

Dont poo poo DFS. I got my sofa there (went for the Memphis curved sofa) at £2100 and I think its a great quality sofa. Shame its a 13 week lead time but hey, worth the wait.

DFS are quite good, I bought mine from there a few years ago & they still look and feel new & I've got 5 children, it's all on the price you have to pay, if the budget is low then more than likely the quality will match.

I thought I might ruffle some feathers putting that about DFS. I'm sure it's possible to have some satisfactory experiences with them, but on the whole, from what people have told me, and even from comments on this site, they're a company I want to avoid.

They have a cheap section in ikea like a clear out its always close to the tills and they always have sofas on reduced and still brand new
