Hi, i was wondering if you guys can help. I am trying to sell my old DFS sofa.. and when i say old it’s only just under 4 years old. I have tried everything- eBay, FB marketplace and gumtree.. i just can’t shift it. I’m not asking too much £250-£300. The DFS price is £900.
I need it to be sold by end of April! Any advice and guidance are welcome 🙏

Have you tried a second hand furniture shop they buy them.

I sold my old sofa for £200 after 4 years and that cost £1700 when new. I just wanted rid but..

No offence but if you haven't sold it for £250-£300 you are asking too much.

Personally I wouldn't pay more than £150 for a used sofa no matter how good a condition it is, unless, it was made out of Italian quality leather for example.

there is little demand for old sofas. i found that it is even hard to give away good old sofas, let alone sell them.

Agreed, the value of second hand items is usually a lol less than the owner thinks,,most people will buy inferior quality items new, then second hand, as no matter what you are selling its not going to as new, whilst you can pick up argos sofas for that money

Honestly I see sofas going for free all the time on fb marketplace as long as its collected,
what you paid and what your asking for aren't connected,
About your only hope if your desperate for the cash is if you have a van /similar is offer free delivery and keep lowering the price

I had my old settees up for £50 and eventually gave them away for free.

As said certain items just don’t seem to sell.

Where platform did you finally sell it on?

I used my works intranet as we do sales, swaps and wanted. So a colleague has offered to buy them off me

Glad you got a buyer and it didn't go to landfill. We are so wasteful. I don't know why second hand furniture is worth so little. I have a 1929 treadle sewing machine as a hall table. It cost me £12 off eBay. My sister has a very comfortable armchair she paid £600 for from next. My friend has the matching sofa she paid £37 for off eBay. (edited)

I totally understand. I’m getting to the point now where i think I’m going to give it to charity.

Our council charges £30 and there usually a wait for a spot, it's becoming a free service from the 1st of April so I'm guessing availablity will be even longer now. You have to keep checking back regularly to get a slot weeks in advance.

I got quoted £90 for a private removal so it's no wonder many people offer their old ones for free on collection.

I think you might have a hard time selling it even if you lower the price to be honest.

Don't know if it helps you to gauge what they're worth, but I bought a dfs sofa, cuddle chair and footstool off Facebook for £120 last year

From personal experience it is very hard to sell sofas, I tried last year to sell two sofas and ended up contacting a charity as they still had the fire certificates. Believe it or not when the charity arrived to uplift them they refused to take them as they were too big and the wrong colour! The sofas were oversized and cream coloured and unfortunately as this happened the day before I handed over the house keys to the new buyer they had to be taken to the tip.

this happened to me. i got the heart foundation charity to come round to collect leather sofas but when they came they said they could not collect that as it would not be the sort of thing that would sell. they were not looking to give it away but to sell it on.

    really opened my eyes

Furniture usually depreciates 50% as soon as it leaves the store. Plus most people hesitate buying used stuff due to hygiene worries.

I use gumtree and shpock... Facebook marketplace if you have that.

I chopped up my last old sofa and took it to the tip in the car. Couldn't give it away and it was in OK condition.
