Best places and prices for second-hand car checks please

Please can someone advise me as to what checks I need to make when purchasing a secondhand car from an indiviual (ie not dealership).
I have heard about HPI checks - is there anyway of getting them from free?
I also would like the security of one of those 'XX point checks', I think it's 166 point check, the ones where a mechanic comes and checks the car over. I realise this will cost but will bring peace of mind! I seem to remember once seeing a deal for an RAC used car point check but cannot find it and might be mistaken.

Basically I'd like info on what precautions to take, how to get a free HPI check and also info on mechanic checks for a car.

    Thank you in advance.

    Thank you.

I tried both the links, the first I could not get any info off as I don't have the mot details.

    The second came up with:

    The enquiry is complete

The vehicle details for **04 *** are:

    Date of Liability 01 04 2008
    Date of First Registration 31 03 2004
    Year of Manufacture 2004
    Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2597CC
    CO2 Emissions 250g/Km
    Fuel Type Petrol
    Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Due to Expire
    Vehicle Colour BLUE
    Vehicle Type Approval M1
The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry.
Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle
    6 Months Rate £115.50
    12 Months Rate £210.0

Could you explain what 'Date of liability' means, what 'Vehicle Status Licence Due to Expire' and also what 'Vehicle type approval M1' means? Does the vehicle excise duty mean the tax disk rate?

I really want to get the HPI type information to see if it has been smashed, stolen etc. Any ideas how to get this and also the mechanical check?

Thank you, rep on its way.

P.S. Actualy planning on having a look at the car tomorrow, wish I had more time to sort all of this out!

This would have been great but not working for me at the moment. Damn!

Date of Liability is = the date when the Road Tax disc runs out.

Vehicle Licence Status = Is same as above but in words. (looking at your info the Road Tax on the car ran out yesterday )

Vehicle Type M1 Approval = just means that it is a light passenger vehicle of an approved design ......... e.g. a "car"

Does the vehicle excise duty mean the tax disk rate?

Yep ! That's how much it will cost you to Tax the car. (and going by the above info it's just run out so you'll need to add that cost onto the price of the car unless the current owner re-taxes it.)

Ok ...when you look at the car tomorrow ask to see the MOT and V5 Doc .......then just jot down the number in the top corner.

Then you can check what came up in the last MOT and check previous ones :

This is one of my post but I did end up buying from a dealer.
    Good luck

the rac web site do a check for a fiver, found out me missis car was a cat c not happy :-(

HPI Check are by far the most comprehensive. You pay 19.99, it tells you whether the car is financed, involved in any accidents, has any outstanding fines, has correct VIN number etc - plus you get 7 days FREE insurance with Norwich Union. I bought a car at the beginning of this month, used this service and was not disappointed.

Yes RAC do have one for cheap I am told - wasn't aware of this at the time - not sure if it's identical - £19.99 doesn't exactly break the bank so I was happy to know I had done it.

i find walking around the car whilst rubbing you chin slightly works. also, for an added "I know what I'm doing" look, kick the tyres a few times and konker down and look underneath the car. That'll have the seller/dealer quaking in their boots!!!

RAC HPI check is £5 less £3 quidco so only £2 but not as comprehensive. See MSE

Thanks for all your help. When I did the check - I did the cashback RAC one so cost £2 - it turns out it was an insurance write-off so staying well clear! I guess there was a reason it was so well priced! Still looking and will bear all of the advice in mind. Thank you.
