    best router for purevpn

    Hi,
I'm looking for the best router in terms of reliability, performance, good wifi and to have purevpn setup on. Currently I have a Netgear 6400, its decent. The wifi strength could be better as it doesnt spread throughout the whole house, same as the bt homehub 5 that we had before. So I have wifi repeaters setup.

But my main issue is that PureVpn doesnt support netgear routers. It has a short list of makes it supports and it also supports DD WRT, so I'm guessing if I got a netgear which can have DD WRT on it then that should work too.

What's everyone else using? What would you recommend?

    This is what PureVPN supports:
    DD-WRT
    Tomato
    Asus
    Belkin
    D-Link
    MikroTik
    pfSense
    Synology PPTP (Earlier Version)
    Synology NAS DSM 5.0 PPTP
    Synology NAS DSM 5.0 OpenVPN
    Linksys
    TP-Link
    dovado
    DrayTek
    Sitecom Gigabit
    Sabai
    TRENDnet

My budget is around £60-£130 for something good and that will work with purevpn. I might push the budget further if it something really good, depends.

    Thanks

Dan have you updated your 6400 in the past 2 days ?

If not I urge you to do so > http://kb.netgear.com/000036386/CVE-2016-582384?cid=wmt_netgear_organic

If you think this is some sort of scam just Google "Netgear security issue #582384" or read this dailymail.co.uk/sci…tml

Take a look at the Aussis routers

I use a Cisco Linksys E2500 with DD-WRT. I only use this router on demand. The only downside is that the 5ghz band is not available with DD-WRT installed, but 2.4ghz works well enough.

will that work with purevpn? Will that also run DD WRT with 5Ghz wifi?

    thanks

thanks for letting me know! I was aware of the recent security issue but I chose to ignore it as I updated not long ago and didnt bother to check if my router was affected as I knew I am going to be changing it.

    But Ive updated it now.

*Update* Okay checked again on dd-wrt and tomato, no firmware available for mine. Also read a post on a forum I came across during my search where someone mentioned that dd-wrt is generally not available or supported on routers with built in modems.

    Wait is this the R6400?
Because that has AdvancedTomato available for it:
    https://advancedtomato.com/downloads/router/r6400
    And dd-wrt:
    https://www.myopenrouter.com/download/dd-wrt-kong-mod-netgear-r6400-2016-12-02
So there might be no need to buy a new router? Or at least you can try the firmware and see how it works. Although it is possible to brick routers flashing so you might want have a failback.

Mine is a D6400. Last I checked was a good while back and it looked like there wasn't going to be any made for it.
I will have a look though.

Ah, okay the R6400 came up first for Netgear 6400 but from the wikidevi it looks like the D6400 is slower (well 400MHz vs 800Mhz but unsure how they compare otherwise) and has half the RAM (128MB vs 256MB

To be honest I got this for a good price as there was a deal posted on here when I got it. Performance wise its decent, well much better than the bt home hub 5 as that always disconnected a lot. This one doesnt. Only thing is that it didnt solve my wifi issue, signal strength is still poor in some part of the house.

Is there any router you or anyone else can recommend for my needs? I need good performance, strong or better wifi and the ability to run purevpn on it or alternatively be able to run Tomato or DD-WRT fw.

    cheers

Afraid not, as while I've installed Tomato and DD-WRT (and Gargoyle) I never found the need to invest in a recent one so the most recent I've used them on is a Netgear WNDR3700 which only 'N' router with 8MB/64MB.
