Best spec for Vista home premium

Am thinking about upgrading to Vista, this is the setup i have

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (2.1GHz) Socket AM2 Energy Efficient L2 1MB (2x512KB) Cache OEM Processor
2gb RAM
250gb Hard drive
Not sure about the graphics, is just the onboard motherboard one

Would that be enough to run Home Premium to a reasonable level? If the graphics 'card' isn't enough can anyone recommend a cheap card that would be suitable?

Thanks!!

depends what you wanna do with it

we have a

2gb ram
160 hhd
1.8ghz processor

blah blah blag

and run VHP

Any low-end graphics card within the £20+ range will be powerful enough for the Vista shininess, which to buy depends on whether you have an AGP or PCI-E motherboard. There isn't a great deal of difference between ATI or nVidia cards, and if you're not using the cards for games, you need only be concerned with the slot type.

Me, I'd not bother buying a copy of Vista, though. You'll probably find it makes your system slower, and for what benefit?

Because my wife thinks 'it looks pretty'

It does look good and i am after a new widescreen monitor, tbh i'm a bit bored of XP too, by now i should imagine it won't be any worse than XP right? Has Vista SP2 been released yet? My processor should be OK then?

Vista is OK,When it is first installed it makes your PC look slow as it spends all its time indexing everything on the hard drive but after a few days things calm down,One thing it is slower at is copying files from to another but if you dont do a lot of this it is fine,Security is improved quite a bit as your permission is needed to install anything on the PC so this stops links on web pages installing things by the back door,Here you will find the Vista upgrade advisor which will tell you if your PC is up to spec but i would suggest buying at least a low end Graphics card ( £30-£40) so as to enjoy Vistas new look,]http//ww…spx

Thanks, from one what to another? I use my PC a lot for streaming to my xbox, is it easy to set up and use with streaming?

I'd wait for Windows 7, seems to be a good'un, but if you cant wait til next year, your comp should be fine

I did think about that, but isn't Windows 7 scheduled for 2010?

I think it is, just checked after posting that post...2nd half of 2009.

By one drive to another i mean eg: writing to external drives and memory cards /thumbdrives etc ,I dont believe streaming is affected the same ,I dont use streaming myself so cant really comment but here is a walk through of how to setup streaming in vista,]http//ww…tml

Ah ok, thanks for the link, i don't do too much writing to other drives, a little bit with pen drives, but an extra few seconds isn't a problem. Drivers aren't an issue nowadays are they? I know when it was first released there was a lot of problems with things not working.

On a side note why can't i find any 70mm case fans on e-buyer? is that not a standard size, i'm sure that's the size i have now, there's a 120mm one which i want that is supposed to be really silent and pretty good at cooling, just realised it's the wrong size though!!

I think it's because 80mm is the size you're looking for. Google seems to back it up, anyway - only about 15k results for 70mm fan, but over 350k for 80mm fan.

Yeah, that's what i thought, but it's measured from one screw to the other right? Not diagonally or anything crazy? My case is pretty old

No, it's the entire width/height (they're square, so it's the same) not just between the two screw hole centres.

70mm fans are a standard size, they're just used a lot less than 60mm and 80mm ones so if yours are 70mm when you remeasure them then you will be able to get a replacement but you'll have a lot less choice on model and where to buy.

If you want the 120mm one you could always drill the appropriate holes in the case provided there's physically room for the fan.

As to switching to vista I'd say that if it ain't broke don't fix it, if you just want a new look then there are plenty of window managers and skins for XP. I don't use them and the only one I can remember off the top of my head is Stardock's WindowBlinds but you should be able to find many more if you look.
