I personally stayed with Halifax as all my other accounts are with them so it was easiest. Most people only get a student account for the free travel card or the overdraft, I didn't need either so went with what suited me best and made my life the easiest.

Hmm wouldn't mind the overdraft but would only need a limit of £200 odd or something and train card could be useful for me as i do use the train for uni.

    Natwest it is then

Most have an overdraft of about £500 standard for first years and … Most have an overdraft of about £500 standard for first years and increases each year if you want (I left mine at £500 as don't need that anyway). The rail pass is £25 a year normally do depends how much you want it, like as I say I didn't need one, I don't get the train that often so probably wouldn't be worth it for me, also if I did I'd probably just spend the money and buy one just to keep it all with Halifax (I get paid £5 a month to have an account with them, so am given £60 a year anyway).

how you get paid 5 quid a month? You have to put certain amount in per month?

I have a natwest student account (for the railcard) and i have a Halifax reward current account.

If you transfer a total of £1000 into your Halifax reward account in a month, you get a fiver at the end of the month.

After rent etc i normally have about £200-£300 of money floating around each month...

I move it into Halifax and then back to natwest roughly once a week so that the total IN is £1000+ (it doesnt matter what total OUT is) and i get a free fiver

Very easily done online, and it makes up for the rubbish interest on the natwest one

I can recommend the Natwest student account, but my best advice is if you go to a campus uni which has a bank on campus then open an account with that bank, then if you have any cheques to pay in or any problems it's not a hassle to pop in there. Also, when there is a massive queue for the cash points then you can just go into the branch and get cash from the cashier.
