i have a job interview...yes another one, and i have to come up with a birthday party for a club which will be 15 next year, that year it started being 1994. So my suggestion is to do a back to 1994 themed party, i have everything i need to know about 1994 and i have my budget. So what i need to start doing now, is find out what people liked about 1994 so i can make the party/club night appeal to a wide audience!

Equally, if I just tell you to shut up go away, it saves you typing anything at all, helpful or otherwise.

OMG!!!! For me (age 20 at the time) in the year 1994 I was devastated by the death of Kurt Cobain. It was for me, like I am sure many others, one of those moments that you remember exactly where you were, who you were with and what you were doing at the time that you heard the news. I won't go into it any further though  except to say that the radio was on in the background and that I started sobbing hysterically to my then boyfriend - at sooo the wrong moment......:w00t:

The best things about 1994 for me -

In music, Manics and The Holy Bible, their best album by far, and an entire tour's worth of amazingly intense shows. 1994 was the last year their lyricist and guitarist Richey Edwards spent alive, and good god, he made it count.

In second place for music for me was Oasis' Definitely Maybe. It's the album that made the band's career, and still stands up as their best, most critics say. Me, I thought Morning Glory and Be Here Now were better, but 1994 remains the year that launched Oasis and Britpop.

It was the year Nirvana's last album came out, too. The year their MTV Unplugged set was recorded. The latter being pretty much the best hour of music to come out of America for the first half of the decade.

In movies, Shawshank Redemption, which is one of my favourite films and currently the all-time highest rated movie on the IMDB, came out. It did rubbish at the cinema and can't really be tied in with any of the general awesomeness of the year, but still, it counts in some way. Forest Gump, Tom Hanks' best film and probably the sweetest feel-good movie ever, came out that year. As did Lion King, which I loved, and which, I think, stands as Disney's last good movie. Pochahontas or something pap like that came out the year after it, and then Disney's big summer hits all got outsourced to Pixar and pish like that. Go and watch the Lion King now actually, I still love it. I still love Elton John for it too, whcih is saying something.

Me, I credit 1994 as being the year when we finally got rid of the 80s and moved on to a vibe that was much more colourful and vibrant. A lot of great bands, actors and people were made that year. It began the vibe of positivity that rang through all of the 90s. It's where everything started to get good. A lot of great stuff happened in the following years, and I don't think much of it would've happened if not for 1994.

It wasn't the best year of the 90s, mind you. But it was the one that began the upturn.

OMG shawshank redemption!!! one of my favourite films EVER

Ya think thats bad my parents were getting like £2.40 a hour doing loads of kitchen work, and one of her friends ended up working for £1 a hour as the boss was greedy, the amount of times his indian resturant was closed down and reopened with different names over the years and different friends I know working there all saying he doesnt pay the staff or tries to pay them with leftover food, no breaks etc.

@ dxx - spot on! That's what I meant to try and say (but didn't get across at all!). Just my devastation with Kurt/Nirvana.....  The whole indie label vibe was amazing in 1994 and that is what stands out for me about that year. I still remember seeing Nirvana play in Bristol Beerkeller with Hole supporting them in 1992/3.....it was amazing, and way before the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' days. Like some of the others you have already mentioned, tonnes of other great bands around at that time too :).

Oh christ, words can't describe how much I envy you for seeing Nirvana. I was too young to catch Nirvana, so all I've got is bootlegs. The gigs looked amazing. You just don't get gigs like that anymore, do you?

And I'd totally forgotten about the Indie label thing. And Pulp! Scotland88, this is ]Do You Remember The First Time, it's by Pulp, listen to it, it's what 1994 sounded like.
