    Best Torrent ISP?

I am fed up with Tiscali restricting my torrent downloads - can anyone recommend a suitable adsl alternative. Cable not an option.

    Thanks in advance

    ISPs who own other ISPs

There are a few major ISPs that own some of the smaller companies out there & it is typical that if the major company invokes a policy this ripples down to the smaller ones also.

Thanks Pavilion - looks like there is some useful info there.

One omission seems to be Virgin though? They seem to offer 8MB with no limits for £15 through a phone line - that seems to me the best deal. Any thoughts on them?

Please note, as mentioned at the start - cable is not an option. So there is no point in anyone posting comments about how good cable is --- Geeesshh !!!

I recently changed to Be. I have now managed to hit the magic 1 MB/sec download speed on Utorrent. Managed to download a 360Mb tv episode in less than 15 minutes.:)

WoW - will check it out

UKOnline dont throttle my P2P - Im paying £15 for 2mb though - which is a bit expensive.

used to be with uk online on a 20meg but only had a 60kbps upload streaam, used to pay £30 per month, but they reduced there charges to compete with be there internet,i am have swapped over to be there internet 20meg download and 1.3meg upload only £24 per month there have one or two glitches with downtime nothing serious, don't throttle ports or threaten you for high usage would recommend them, they are now part of there o2 group which is owned by telefonica.

Please expand!! I know they have a basic fair use policy - what I meant was that they do not limit like talk talk with 40 Gig and that they dont throtle the torrents.

Thanks to all the posters so far.

    surely an oxymoron?

Hi, I'm with BT broadband just now and i'm finding them to be very shite for the £27 a month i'm paying, plus i getting very slow downloads with my torrents as well, i've tried all the port forwarding etc but still the same, so i am going to just go under another isp as i'm fedup with ma so called 8mb broadband, but the only isp's i can get in my area are below, not many plus i can't get the BE isp which seems to be one of the best plus i can't get cable either, can anyone please tell me which would be the best one to move to. Thanks

    Orange Broadband
    NamesCo Broadband

It's terrible for people who can't get cable.
ADSL is outdated and crappy, the quicker companies realise this the better UK internet will progress.

I've just moved to BE Unlimited and they are really good at speed and absolutely no download limit. I'm only getting 14MB due to my line quality (if you are lucky you get 24MB full speed) and able to do 1.3MB/s with torrent. Fantastic product - just minimum 3 months contract and no hidden cost.

*BE has a referral program if you are interested PM me.

Fair doos,, Be does look pretty good and thats some speed - bit pricey though.

    dcx_badass

They limit what you can download from 4pm-midnight. Some of the packages … They limit what you can download from 4pm-midnight. Some of the packages are limited to 350mb in that time and if you break it your put on 512 or 1 meg speeds for 4 hours!

Appreciate the heads up - but where does that info come from - I cant find it anywhere?

Thanks everyone for the info - but please dont bother with the "cable is better than adsl" chat, as I mentioned before its not an option.

I'm with crapscali, sorry, tiscali and they throttle back from 4pm till midnight. After midnight I get very good speeds, so I just leave my download to work whilst I'm in bed.
I agree they are generally crap though. I can get Torrents but gradually edonkey and limewire have ceased to connect at all.

    Thanks for this useful post.

It turns out that the limits you mention above relate Virgin's cable broad band - I was interested in the non-cable broad band bundle 2. However after your post I found the following

Monitoring traffic: Well each week we’ll monitor how much data our b … Monitoring traffic: Well each week we’ll monitor how much data our broadband customers download during peak times only. We measure this in kilobytes (KB). Peak times run from 4pm till midnight. We then add up the total amount of data downloaded over the week per customer. We then rank the list of customers, heaviest users first. From this list, we pick out the top 5% of heaviest users over the week. We reserve the right to traffic manage these customers during peak times. Traffic management lasts for just 1 week and is only applied during peak times (4pm till midnight). Traffic Management: For the small number of customers who are in the top 5% of heaviest users, our traffic management solution will temporarily set download speeds to no lower than 512Kbit/s. This limit is applied daily, 4pm until midnight, for 1 week.

So sod that - I am now looking at ADSL24 - they look fantastic

Whilst i appreciate Orange/Wanadoo are not the best "rated" ISP, ive never had any problems and have a 6meg access line with freewifi and calls, and have never been restricted on my bittorrent use.
Normally average about 400kbs with my downloads.

If i actually paid for my broadband id probably go with "Be"

OK got my MAC code from Tiscali - pretty impressed they sent it within 2 hours of contacting them.

Have discounted Virgin based on info on this site - As Cable and BeThere are not available to where I live it looks like I will go for ADSL24

    Anyone any experience of ADSL24??

    just move to usenet!!!

    Not allowed to ask that.

    ok no problem

Well I only started using the Internet a year ago. So I haven't been a loads of companies, but I'm currently on Sky Broadband. I find it alright for P2P downloading, I've been on there basic package of 2 Mega and 2 GB download limit but I think I download past that because I downloaded games and movies and nothing happened. But later I updated to there Mid Package 8 Meg and 8 GB download limit, I get 215+ Kb/s for a file with 300+ seeders and average around 99 KB/s. Thats all I got to say.

i have plusnet premier option 3
i do not think this is available anymore but they do limit the daytime use just use a scheduler and download offpeak no cap with them.

I'm with Virgin, I write this so many times its unreal, I'll just save this in notepad.

Virgin Media - Good Down, Bad Up.

Whilst being a customer whilst called NTL, I discovered that they limit you on the time of day, such as peak and off peak. For example I choose not to upload faster than 35kb between 7am - 11pm(to1amish) since I get cut out. Don't know if this is my router or Virgin Media, though between 11pm(to1amish) I usually upload at upto 120kb/sish. All the time whilst using BitTorrent I've maxxed out at 1600kb/s on one torrent. My download limit is perminatly limited to 1024kb/s in total now since I my upload rate can't keep up.

Summary, if you want to keep fair, don't use Virgin Media.
