Ok, so as I get older these things make my brain hurt.

We have Sky as our ISP, just moved house and the max speed we can get into the new place is about 36 Mbps…… I’ve read that Skys Q Router is not the best.

Two kids, 4 x TV’s, Alexa’s, Switch, Firesticks, Xbox, IPads and IPhones etc…. Yes I know, it’s ridiculous.

Couple of upstairs rooms struggle sometimes, it’s only a 3 bed house though.

Am I best off getting a new router or a mesh system or other advice please?

If the house is fairly new, why not powerline adapters and plug in using the ethernet.

    Cheap, easy, quick.

Depends - everyone jumps on the mesh route but that's not the best solution for everyone.

Sky always tied you to their own router - a lot of third party routers will now work, but you would need to do your research.

Personally, I had a couple of powerline adapters lying around, so use that to get wired connections upstairs to a 5 port switch, and then use a wireless router (non-modem) to act as a wifi access point upstairs with the same wifi details.

I would put some ethernet cabling in and ethernet wall sockets, especially if you plan on redecorating. (edited)

    I agree with the others.

Your kids are going to moan like hell though with only 36Mbps coming into the property, when things grind to a halt. (edited)

I found the Sky Q router excellent in my old house. Just be aware there are only 2 ethernet ports on it.

If you're complaining about the speed actually coming into the house (from the network) changing to a mesh system won't alter that.

Not at all, we had 130 in last house and there were spots in there that the Sky hub couldn’t get to.

Just need the blind spots sorting really, I’ll have a look at the Powerline Adapters

    Cheers all

what speed are you getting at this house? What is the router synching at, what speed did Sky promise you?

Sky is pretty easy these days they don’t tie you in. You need a modem then any router you like. I use a Draytek 130 linked to an ASUS router (it was what I had for cable). You can get some modem/router combined that do work like the TP-Link VR series for instance.

Download a WiFi analyser app and check if your router is on a busy channel.

The app will give you a little graph with network names, and channel numbers at the bottom, simply changing to one where there's no as much interference from others makes your signal stronger.
