Best way to block internet

I live in a student house, their is one person that is constantly downloading stuff. Every time one of use wants to go on xbox live it gets ridiculously laggy. Anyway I can block her ip without her knowing?

Block her MAC address using the router sure.

if you router supports it, install ddwrt fimrware on it and then do proper badnwidth management, so you can give this person only 10% of the full bandwidth.

however you can block the MAC address so the router doesnt provide an IP address - will be under the settings of the wireless router

If I go through the router option, will a screen come up on her pc saying you have been blocked etc?

have a word with them if that fails just dob them in if they are DLing pirate stuff

We''ve told her in the past, so this is the only way now.

In b4 tomorrows thread about shared students house and op is having problems downloading films because someone elses xbox is taking all the bandwidth

Who pays for the internet?

women just dont bloody understand gaming

Not really fair to block them if you are all paying for it equally.
You need to split the bandwidth.

The internet payment is equal, so I dont see why she has the right to hog all the bandwidth while everyone else sits around waiting for web pages to load.

Get a program called 'Netlimiter' and install it on their computer.
or 'DU Super Controler'

These are both good programs where you can cap the upload/download speed limit to your preference.

What I'd do, is this:

1) Run Speed Test
2) Work out how fast your actual interweb connection is
3) Get her to limit her P2P app's bandwidth to 1/3rd of that number, within waking hours. P2P apps have bandwidth schedules that can set this up within seconds
4) If she doesn't comply, you and the other however-many change the wireless key and block her MAC address, and she can pay for her own internet connection.

If none of the above works. Turn downloads to pause while playing live. That's wat I do and my conection works while paused.

Ive googled the ports that torrent programs require and blocked them.

She won't be able to connect to the router, when she asks you just say working fine for me must be your computer.

Why in any way on any level would you think it would.

Because it's supposed to be faster than Wireless is it not ?

I didn't want to sound stupid, but its what I was thinking (agreeing with Dcx). To 'whatsthepoint' he/she is complaining about lag due to a bitch hogging all the 'bandwidth'. Plugs will not increase their bandwidth, unless the OP turns off the wireless feature of the router.

I have 2 of these one for my PC & 1 for the kids Xbox or PS3 & we are getting a better signal & even the netbook gets good signal strength on the WiFi,so both of you are saying I'm better off just going back on Wireless with my PC ?

You're misunderstanding the problem....read it again

The OP lives in a house with WiFi & so can use these for a better signal .........No ? lol

are you baiting??

tell her to download after midnight.

If your net is anything like my crappy BT you wont even get decent speeds on torrents at peak times anyway unless private trackers or newsgroups etc.

Or just say to her, I want to play xbox etc tonight from 8 - 10 so **** off lol

Mine and her connection are wired.

Please answer the following question. Are you:A) IlliterateB) TrollingC) … Please answer the following question. Are you:A) IlliterateB) TrollingC) just generally stupid.

I'll choose Letter C.
So what do these plugs do if they don't give you a better & faster connection ?

Even with someone draining the bandwith are you saying these plugs will not help at all.
BTW:Why would you think I'm trolling. Maybe if you know more about these plugs then it's better to share the info than insult me.

Why not set her set hours she can download at
eg 2-6 in the morning, then it affect no one.

Just 'ban' downloads between say 5 and midnight

Wheresmenuts - powerline adapters are just an alternative connection method to wireless or hard wire to the router. The op's speed problem is not due to infrastructure but a roommate using the available bandwidth

WIRELESS OR WIRED, WHICH IS BETTER?
ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT!

If you block the torrent ports, it will probably say so in her torrent client. If I remember correctly uTorrent will mention "blocked ports" if it can't connect and that'll indicate you've done something.

Blocking her MAC isn't fair as it will disallow any kind of connection and she is paying her share after all.

Add "torrent" to your router's list of blocked keywords.

Then she won't be able to download *.torrent files, unless she knows how to use trackerless torrents she's screwed.

How can you block her IP without her knowing? Her internet will stop working. Plus, as she is currently paying a share, then you cannot block her.

Anyway, all you need to do is set up the QoS in the router.

Plus, as she is currently paying a share, then you cannot block her.

Oh god forbid, that would be so inconsiderate wouldn't it?... X)

Two wrongs don't make a right.

I had this exact problem and discovered and incredibly simple way to block torrents. Go into your router and find an option that lets you block sites. Then just type in .torrent as one of the "sites" you wish to block. Save exit. Done. This way whenever she tries to download a .torrent file the router will block it. Worked perfectly on my Netgear router. You can even do it to a schedule so she can download at night.

Edit: I just noticed somebody mentioned this already but oh well!
