Best way to start from scratch

Hi guys, hoping some of you guys can help me out!

My computer has recently started slowing down and acting strange, probably because of the amount of crap i've thrown onto it!

Once i recieve my external, i plan to back up anything needed, then want to restart the computer back to basics, and was wondering how this was done?

Any advice, tips will be appreciated!

    Thanks
    Lee

Different computers have different methods Lee. Eg a Dell would be different to an Acer.

Let us know the make and model and I'm sure someone can help.

Erm its a dell dimension 4700 running XP if that helps!

Just had to do that with my dell laptop, and it was done by pressing F11 and ctrl when turning it on - is pretty straight forward after that.

Could always call them for assistance, they were pretty helpful with me and even called me back so it didnt cost me for the call!

Thanks (again) kelly. Did you do a complete restore, i.e back to how it was pretty much after production?

It will take it back to a basic Windows install so anything you have installed yourself you'll have to reinstall.

Don't forget to backup your photos, documents and music and make sure you have all the driver disks to hand.

    Yup, total factory restore.

Didnt have to use any disks or anything to restore, but had to reinstall norton, office etc afterwards

dont forget to save ur favorites and passwords etc....as ppl always forget to back their favorites up and its annoying when u realise lol

Use a program to back up all your drivers onto a pen drive.

Driver Genius has a 15 day trial licence to do this. ]http//ww…om/
It is very handy as it backs up all drivers onto one folder and saves time searching for the graphics driver that xp just doesn't have.

wah wah wah, I have an external hardrive, can that be used?

Alternatively, you can go to the dell site and download all of the drivers that you require. Put them on a CD / external HDD.

Basically you want the drivers to be the first things that you install after re-installing windows (I tend to go for video -> sound -> others in that order).

You don't want to have to go online without a virus checker to get them.

And you don't want to have to install the virus checker before your drivers (i.e. to go online to get them).

So get your drivers now, before the format.

It can, but driver Genius will search your hard drive and find all drivers including camera/scanners/printers etc.

Well worth doing for everyone IMO

Putting them onto an external hard drive should work too, but they should all fit onto a pen drive.

Download and save xp SP2 onto the harddrive to.

Depends how new the computer is, the backup CD may already have SP2 on it. However it's fine to install drivers then antivirus then go online to install SP2 if you want. Just make sure that drivers are the 1st thing you install after windows :-)
