Portable hard drive and dvd player with usb playback would make life easier.

Ever thought of that? Is it something you want to do regularly or is it just a one off?

on a pc i would use winavi, but as you have a mac, no idea. ~Best thing to do is google avi to dvd mac

Toast or Popcorn, though both are commericial.
The encoding back to DVD compatible video_ts takes forever.

Can watch it through an XBOX360 or PS3 if you have either of them.

Or get one of these WDTV mini

for a mac, keep it as a .avi and use VLC to watch it with. VLC way better than any other quicktime or windows rubbish.

Coincidentally, VLC also works under windows.

if you have a divx dvd player you should be able to play avi already

charming personality!

Just goes to show why people are reluctant to give help when others are so ready to call them an idiot.

BTW: you can watch .avi files directly on your tv.

Look for VisualHub. It'san old Mac prog which is now discontinued but can still be found on several sites. It is the closest Mac equiv to ConvertXtoDvD and will generate a watchable DVD without too many choices to confuse any noob. From memory, it creates an ISO which you can then burn from Disk Utils.

But be aware that it's not as good or flexible as ConvertX (I'd say picture quality is a little poorer and picture cropping and sync can sometimes be a little "iffy"), but since it's discontinued shareware that hasn't been updated in several years, the quality is generally acceptable and you needn't feel bad about taking it from anywhere you can find it.

Since switching to OSX I've found that ConvertXtoDvd is one of the few PC prog's I still miss. I have WinXP running under VMware Fusion on my hackintosh (what can I say - the kids need MS Publisher for compatibility with their school computers) and so I have ConvertX installed on it too. Drag and drop the file into the PC Window, run ConvertX and the job is done.

And before anyone starts mocking - Yes I fully appreciate that this is a lot more of a pain than just running Windows but the OP asked what to do from his Mac......

I didnt call you an idiot! I called you ignorant for saying VLC is better than windows rubbish yet its a windows program lol

Good luck trying to play AVI files on a TV too without a DIVX DVD player / Conversion software to dvd.

You should only offer help if you have a clue what you are on about X)
