better training facilities for our young sportsmen/women

just watched some of our brilliant sportsmen/women give 110%

its about time government allowed all potential gymnasts - athletes - etc followed other countries practice - be members of armed forces - giving them chance to train and get leave without having to give up jobs - rely on family to drive them 50-100miles a day just to practice - only 1 can think of in this position was Kelly Holmes

so many of the (minor) sports have very little funding - yet we expect them to perform and win medals -

they have done brilliantly this olympics and i for 1 think they deserve better facilities to do this -

i'd rather money is spent on education rather than athletics

edit: but i still think some money should be spent to encourage young people to take up sports

it all starts in school - but to carry it on -most russian sportsmen/women are in the armed forces - the americans give their potentials scholarships - in uk you have to be very very lucky - have the contacts etc to get 1 of these privileged bursaries

England should put money on events there successful, there not ever going to win the 100m (mens/womens) anytime soon so put money into other events such as rowing were they got a good chance of gold, and discard the 100m.

yeh they need more money, i just read in the sunday paper that just 1 weeks pay that a footballer gets is enough to train 2 elite athletes for a whole year, mind you however much a footballer gets there never get the respect of our athletes

its fair that footballer get paid what they do, people pay to watch them, so its only fair they get paid correctly to how much they earn the club.

It's a luxury to have the best athletes in the world and judging by the way things are going we won't have much money to spend on luxuries... other than **** modern art.

Footballers get paid far too much for what they do IMO.

    Totally agree with the O.P

12 billion invested in UK sport since 1994 by the national lottery

Seems to now be paying off now.

yeh no footballer deserves £150,000 a week to play 1 or 2 90 minute matches, or even sit on bench and watch

How do they get over paid, people just think its okay to jump on the "yeah footballers get paid too much" bandwagon.

C Ronaldo/Rooney earns about £80k a week, without them last season man u most likely would not have won the league or Euro champ. Fans come to watch the best players in the world and pay £50 a ticket each! Its only fair that Ronaldo and other places get a cut of it, because without them, Man U would make no money, I love this "they only play 90mins a week", they train everyday, and earn man U x2/3/4 mores money they Man u spend on there wages.

bg spends far too much time on here to be anything other than a troll

I'm surprised one of your countless gifts isn't being godlike at football, considering all the other 'talents' you apparently have, and yet you still spend all day on HUKD. You must lead a very sad life if you have to big yourself up to randomers on the internet

The company i work for make billions of dollars a year, should this not mean then that i should be on 10s of thousands a week as without people like me they would make no money. I'm just following your logic

if it wasn't for players like Gerrard, Rooney, Liverpool and Man u would be middle table teams earning a faction of what there income per month as a football club is today, only fair that they get a share, and the only people moaning about what they get paid is "Joe Public", Owners of football clubs are not stupid, there millionaires for a reason, you think when they give Gerrard 80k a week, its a waste, no they now they will get a bigger return on the investment (I.e Liverpool winning the European cup), as a result the team progresses and they attract better players to the club.

It seems people are just upset that footballers get alot higher wage them them (they get 100x more then what I do), but they do deserve it.

I think this talk about footballers being paid too much is just sour grapes from min-wagers.

There's two kinds of jobs in this world, skilled and unskilled jobs. Unskilled jobs, anyone can do. Stuff like stacking shelves, sitting at checkouts, call centre work, serving drinks, 'customer assistance', for example. If you work in one of these roles, you're basically just a number doing a duty, and the company will pay you as little as they possibly can. This is because you are interchangable with a monkey.

Skilled jobs however, they require intelligence, talent, and knowledge. They require special people, and as such, companies need people with specific talents for their roles. How much they get paid depends on what that person is worth to the company, and how much that person needs to be paid to encourage them to join, and encourage them to stay with the company.

Footballers are special people of talent that far surpasses the avage player. Their skills, although they're expensive for a club to buy, more than justify their price. If they didn't, they'd buy a different player's services. It's just a matter of supply, demand, and the cash value of someone's skills.

I don't see the problem with them being paid as much as they are. The money doesn't come from the government, it just comes from people voluntarily buying football tickets for games, and all the merch and TV stuff that goes with it. It doesn't affect me, or any of the people complaining about it, any more than you let it affect you. So what's wrong with it all?

Start to look up? Do you remember the Atlanta olympics? GB are having their best Olympics since before WW2, they are currently 3rd overall in the medals table and looking at the next few days could finish with 15+ golds - at Atlanta, we won one... We now have a cycling team that is leagues ahead of any other nation, and very strong sailing and rowing teams to boot.

That massive investment in UK sport has paid dividends big-time already

but anyone can kick a ball around a pitch, in fact i have seen a monkey do that and anyway gerrald is on £140,000+ a week he dont deserve that.

anyway back on topic our athletes are worth more, but at least there respected.

you keep saying he don't deserve that, but you have not given a why reason why, I have already listed several in this thread why they should get paid what they do, just saying "he dont deserve that" is fairly poor debating, but I expect that.

yeah good point they are winning more goal medals, but there winning them in what I feel are "Lower events" or less mainstream. The big events such as the track and field where they need to make a strong push, but I don't think they will ever win much.

I hope for some more input on this whole thread and the facilities for athletes , im enjoying it!

I also think they should be more sports club for children, keeps them off the street casing trouble and gets them fit!

Until they fix the NHS i'd be happy to watch us win no medals

OP, what are saying exactly about athletes and the armed forces? I'm guessing there are some athletes who would be opposed to training with the military on principled/ethical grounds. Are you just suggesting they should have access to military training grounds or something more than that?

gymnasts swimmers cyclists - minority sports that the forces could accomodate - to which we have excelled in - in this olympics - a few 'class track stars' get compensated by promotors - nike etc - majority dont - these are to who i was referring to in original post

    Muh?

I think you say it all when you say "They". "They", as if there's a single team of people that run the entire country, and that can only do a single job at a time. But that's just not how the world works, is it? So us winning medals has nothing to do with 'fixing' the NHS.
