    Beware www.thetrainline.com and www.shopperdiscounts.com

    Just thought I would share this just in case anyone else falls foul. My wife was looking through her bank statements and noticed £10 per month being taken from her card from shopperdiscounts.com. She has never heard of the company and contacted them asking why they were taking £10 from her account every month. She received this reply:

    "Thank you for contacting Shopper Discounts & Rewards.
    Our records show that either yourself or someone in your household completed an online transaction with The Trainline. After your transaction, you were offered the opportunity to join the Shopper Discounts & Rewards programme with a £15 cash back voucher and a 30 day free trial. Immediately next to the offer, the Offer and Billing Details were displayed. By entering your name, address and credit or debit card details and then clicking on the 'yes' button to accept the offer, you authorised us to charge the monthly membership fee of £10 to the credit card or debit card that was provided, after your free trial period ended.
    Shopper Discounts & Rewards is an online savings and discount programme that enables you to earn cash back rebates of up to 20% at over 700 online retailers. In addition, members can benefit from shopping guarantees and protections.
    If you are satisfied you don't need to do anything, your benefits will automatically continue and you will be charged the monthly membership fee. If you do not wish to remain in the programme, simply call our free phone number 0800 731 9935 to cancel your membership, Monday-Friday 8am-8pm and Saturday 9am-4pm."

    Basically, read the small print and tick the right box when using thetrainline.com or they will pass your card details on to a 3rd party who will take money out of your bank account.

    You actually have to go to A LOT more effort than just tick a box. You have to manually enter all of your information and then accept the terms.

    It is not as if they have cloned your details from The Trainline without your permission.

    I thought it was mentioned in the details, rather than in the small print?

    i have been passed onto one of these before and nearly signed up to it. they make it sound really good then it mentions the £10 a month lol that was my stopping point. it isnt in a small print it just goes on and on and sounds good then mentions the cost at the end. sorry but your wife must not of read it properley.

    correct!i nearly did it my self i entered all the details and then just as i was about to tick the box for the terms and conditions i noticed the £10 a month charge lol.

    it does normally say quite explicitly about costs involved.
    i believe its the same on nationalexpress after you buy tickets

    My point is that the deal is not clear. If it was clear we would have understood why the money was being taken out and we would have heard of the company . II googled shopperdiscounts and found lots of other similar stories. It also eems like a lot of companies use shopperdiscounts too. This is merely a warning to others to check the small print as I wouldnt want others to make the same mistake as my mrs and many others (see links below).
    The guardian quotes :
    "When Financial Mail went through a Thetrainline transaction, it said: 'Your booking is complete. Click here to claim your £10 cash back incentive on your next thetrainline.com booking!' This was followed by a continue button and the instructions: 'By clicking above, you can claim your reward from our preferred partner when you join their programme. Terms and conditions apply.' Credit card and personal details then had to be entered."

    I do know that she should have read the small print and appreciate all the comments positive and negative. But as I said It wasn't clear enough and lots of People are in the same boat and I dont want anyone make the same mistake as her. This is a warning ,not a sympathy vote. If it saves someone a tenner then I will be happy.

Your wife is just an idiot, it's 100% completely clear and a different website after the ticket is bought.

    That is the page you're taken to (from mymemory, I doubt it's different from trainline). No scrolling needed or anything, it looks pretty clear to me, not hidden in small print as suggested.


    In fact, it's mentioned 5 times on that page. The word "free" is only mentioned 4 times in relation to the offer (it's mentioned once more as a free phone number, unrelated to the offer).


    You also have to enter your credit card details, which would suggest to me (even if I hadn't read the page) that there was some money to be taken for the service.

    I know that, and cheers for reminding me. As I said, this is a warning to others not to make the same mistake. If you google the company you will see that a lot of people have made that same mistake. I hope no one here does the same.
