All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

Are they saying, that we all get up in the morning to work, but in reality we are not really living?

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

This I don’t get, sounds like everyone he talking about in part 1 are sad, but they still go to work anyway because they have to ?

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world

I see this as saying they are most happy when they are sleeping, but I Don’t get the dying part, are they using it as a metaphor to sleep being like death?

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me

last two lines, no idea,

How do you peeps read it as?

song: mad world, will post other songs later that Im trying to understand.

What is "potety"?

From the writers themselves, just to give you bit more info;

Lyrically the song is pretty loose. It throws together a lot of different images to paint a picture without saying anything specific about the world.
—Roland Orzabal

It's very much a voyeur's song. It's looking out at a mad world from the eyes of a teenager.[1]
—Curt Smith

Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

The teacher is a figure of authority and knowledge, as well as wisdom. Although the teacher teaches lessons of life, He/she looks right through the young narrator. Once again the narrator reminds us that we are Insignificant.

Barky, you looked at same thing as me

BG, that how I read it as well, the teacher looked through him, like he was insignificant.

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
"Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson?"
Look right through me, look right through me

This is a first day at a new school perhaps. He feels invisible or insignificant, even to the people that are meant to care (teachers)

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had

This is basically suicidal. He is saying his best dreams are the ones that end in him "dying". Essentially it feels like a release from life. Manifestation of sub concious. Maybe not even realised how low he is until this realisation.

thanks nikki and Barky, I didnt really read the song like that, I dont think life is meaningless, do they mean life all together, or the lifestyle we live, i.e work in the morning and do what we do, are they referring to that life being meaningless, or ALL LIFE?

i would interpret that last verse, as a child who is attending first day at school, and has asked a teacher for some help. The implication of the whole song appears to be that as adults, life becomes a bit 'groundhog day' and that we operate as drones -same domestic routine followed by work routine followed by more domestic routine etc. When the child asks the question, the teacher is just going through the motions of being professional, but isn't really interested, and so just looks straight through the child....well you did ask?!

I think its just a song about being a teenager and a life filled with confusion/angst etc etc.

Charades, pop skill
Water hyacinth, named by a poet
Imitation of life.
Like a koi in a frozen pond.
Like a goldfish in a bowl.
I don't want to hear you cry.

Thats sugarcane that tasted good.
Thats cinnamon, thats Hollywood.
C'mon, c'mon no one can see you try.

You want the greatest thing
The greatest thing since bread came sliced.
You've got it all, you've got it sized.
Like a Friday fashion show teenager
Freezing in the corner
Trying to look like you don't try.

Thats sugarcane that tasted good.
Thats cinnamon, thats Hollywood.
C'mon, c'mon no one can see you try.

No one can see you cry.

That sugar cane that tasted good.
That freezing rain, that's what you could.
C'mon, c'mon on no one can see you cry.

This sugarcane
This lemonade
This hurricane, I'm not afraid.
C'mon, c'mon no one can see you cry.

This lightning storm
This tidal wave
This avalanche, I'm not afraid.
C'mon, c'mon no one can see me cry.

That sugar cane that tasted good.
That's who you are, that's what you could.
C'mon, c'mon on no one can see you cry.

That sugar cane that tasted good.
That's who you are, that's what you could.
C'mon, c'mon on no one can see you cry.

thanks everyone for the replies, how about the song anyone want to take a stab?

song: youtube.com/wat…E9Q

It's by REM, stick your head up your own **** for it's meaning, all will become apparent (_;)

Update to this post.........................Bg1 wants help with his homework..................

Mad world, mad world

I don't think he is actually talking about sleeping/dreaming but actually he's talking about hopes and aspirations that are dying (because of the verses earlier I guess about being in the rat race and having a dull unfulfilling existence) and he is finding it "hard to take" + he's seeing other people in the same predicament and thinks a mad world.

I might be totally wrong but thats my take.

He pulls prayer book out of his sleeping bagPreacher lights up a butt and … He pulls prayer book out of his sleeping bagPreacher lights up a butt and takes a dragWaitin' for when the last shall be first and the first shall be lastIn a cardboard box 'neath the underpassGot a one-way ticket to the promised landYou got a hole in your belly and gun in your handSleeping on a pillow of solid rockBathin' in the city aqueduct

the bit in bold, Im failing to understand, ive posted the song above on you tube, anyone care to interpretor that?

to me i read it as the preacher in in a plight, and is waiting for something positive to happen or die?
