i would assume that one would have to be over the age limit for the particular state you are in, but you need to be 21 to rent a car i think

You need to be another 10 years older I think.

you have to be more grown-up than someone who feels the need to prefix his posts with his superstar tag. cos' that rocks, really.

bump for anyone giving actual advice

A tricky one. How to find out....I'm out of ideas. Not really

I think it's 21 to hire a car in the USA (despite them being able to drive from 16 or whatever). I seem to recall that it's more to do with the insurance than any legal thing.

as ever in the us i think its dependent on which state.

i also think you require an IDP

USAThe U.S. State Department says it has authorized two organizations to … USAThe U.S. State Department says it has authorized two organizations to issue IDPs - the American Automobile Association (enter your location carefully), and the American Automobile Touring Alliance, which offers IDPs through the National Automobile Club .These are the ONLY two authorized places for U.S. residents to get an IDP: all other locations and sources on the Internet are not authorized, and some are scams that promise a lot, and charge even more, for a document that may not be accepted where you are traveling. The department warns tourists intending to drive overseas to first check with the embassy or consulate of the countries they plan to visit to learn about the requirements for driver's license, road permits, and auto insurance.
