I agree. Owning several french cars there hit a miss.

Old clios if you find a gooden are great.

Had a 1998 1.4i Champ Elysee Clio was a quality car for thrashing about.

Wouldn't buy the later models, and pugs have a 306 now engines great but the build quality sucks. Suspension is a no no.

So you mate won't go wrong.

    +me

Jap cars have extras inbuilt. German engineering is superior.

Having said that my first car was a 500 quid "drive it into the ground" deal. Had all my accidents in it.

no more than a 1.4 and anything like a 106, 206, corsa, fiesta, saxo, clio would be cheap to run and insure

Is the budget £2,000 with insurance or without?

Also it will be cheaper if he/she is a named driver on parents.

Edit - just noticed its with.

Not sure what car you could get for that budget.

My punto cost me £1200 and insurance was £1,100 so £2,300 overall.

You have to bawl with the window down as your arm doesn't fit anywhere else

My first car was a 2001 Fiat Punto when I just turned 18 - I shopped around for ages to find one in mint condition but it paid off. I had it for 18 months, until last week when someone hit me and wrote it off, cue the violins. The insurance wasn't particularly cheap (£115 a month with Direct Line fully comp), but doing the Pass Plus will reduce this a bit.

However......... I was feeling very sorry for myself on Monday and went out shopping with my credit card... I came back with a 1 Series. Not bad for my second car at 19 ;).

EDIT - forgot to say I'd stay well away from a Corsa - I had a brand new one as a courtesy car and it was terrible, I'd take my old Punto over a Corsa any day. I can't speak for the older ones though - plus it was a 1.2, maybe the ones with bigger engines are better, but bigger engine = more expensive insurance.

My brother just passed his test, he's 17 and he's paying almost £2000 on insurance alone, so I'm not sure how old your friend is but he might want to take that into account!

So does the manual version - I used over half a tank doing 70 in fifth gear, and I only drove 110 miles. I'm driving the 5 door version - the car is far too big for the engine. There's absolutely nothing there when you put your foot down, and it feels cheap and nasty inside.

So what exactly was wrong with my suggestion of a Ford Fiesta?

if you want cheap ins stay to a small engine size as this will partly help also insurers look at high insident cars ie golfs etc that have a rep of being owned by boy racers (not all of them i know), other factors like nickability etc. my first car was a nissan micra and it was excellent value for money plus really reliable it was an A reg1980something or other and it never broke down and flew thru its services and mots with littleor no help, i would def recommend (as long as your mate doesntmind what the car looks like) maybe an older micra or almera or maybe toyota starlet or corolla as these are very low insurance groups. if you search about and get the right little bus for the right price you can usually sell it back on a year or two later after you have earned some no claims bonus (touch wood), and get almost what you paid for it back again as it goes to its next new young driver.

Wassamata BG, can your mate not use the internet?
