Bit Torrents - where do I start?

I've dowloaded U Torrent and Vuse (azureus) and checked out a few downloads on Demonoid and Pirate Bay, BUT when I tried to download a small pics file it didn't move.

What else do I need to do configure? Are there are warnings I should heed or things to avoid?

P2P and torrents are things I have no knowledge of whatsoever. Everything I google seems to be really old info and nothing current.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyone know of a very basic guide?

Look on their forums, for port-forwarding and understanding seeds and leechers FAQS, its all info thats available on their website and forum.

i have in the past used pirate bay but i want to know is it legal? if you read comments on the site it would say it is, but i'm unsure. can anyone confirm?

portforward.com/rou…htm

you need to set up your ports so they allow vuze or utorrent (you don't need both btw) to connect.

having said that, even without ports forwarded the files should download. try another file, the one you have selected may have no or very few seeds.

There is a decent guide here

Cheers - Is one better than the other Vuse or U Torrent?

Is it really as simple as downloading the software, then going to a torrent website and then simply dragging the torrent file into the program?

How do I avoid being a leech?

Join 'private' groups who share and record the ratio of each user.....

If you get something for free that everyone else has to pay for, what do you think? :x

The clue is in the name... >>>>>>PIRATE

Torrent sites aren't exactly illegal in that they don't actually host any pirated material, it goes without saying though that downloading pirated material with a bittorrent client is definitely illegal as you're uploading whilst downloading i.e sharing with others.

I get sex for free. Others have to pay for it. - I think you'll find they are the illegal ones

I was just answering his question. He asked if it was illegal and it is. The idea is not to get caught.
The problem is that it's now to mainstream that it's not worth the hassle. It was much better when (the majority) people had never heard of a torrent.

What's the best - Vuse or uTorrent ?

I've heard Vuse is resource sapping due to Java???

I would use utorrent, has most of the features of other programs, but the main plus is it's not a resource hog as it uses so little memory.

Picked this up from Steve O on a different forum:-

uTorrent has pretty much all the advanced features that Vuze has, but it's MUCH smaller and uses much less ram. Downloaded it, and follow this guide to get your best possible speeds:

Problem: uTorrent speeds are slow.

There are many factors to consider.
Are there many seeders (people sharing the entire torrent)?
Are there many leechers (people downloading and sharing parts of the torrent)?
Are you a hit-and-run downloader? Some trackers will give preferential treatment to people who share (upload) a larger amount than what they have downloaded.
Does your ISP (like Comcast) throttle bittorrent traffic? Check this list:
azureuswiki.com/ind…Bad...
Are you running all torrents at the same time? You only have so much bandwidth. It's good karma to share more than you've downloaded, but if you are downloading pause all the other torrents until your current download is complete, then resume uploading the others. You can get SUBSTANTIALLY better speeds if you follow the tweaking guide I will list at the end of this. If you're willing to do a few speed tests, some math, and change some settings, it will be well worth it.

If you have XP, you'll want to patch your Max Half-open connections with this file:
torrentfreak.com/sta…26P...
or for Vista, go here and follow directions:
mydigitallife.info/200…/09...
Your max half-open is currently 10 (most likely). I have mine patched to 80. Do not go over 100.

You'll want to pick a "listening port" to forward. Here's a list of what ports are used for different services:
iana.org/ass…num...
You'll want to use a port that out of the way, unassigned, and not blocked by your ISP. I use port 50000 (fifty thousand).
In uTorrent, you'll go to options>preferences>connection and put a port number in the "port used for incoming connections" spot. Do not click the "random port" button.
You'll need to forward that port on your router. Here's a good guide of how to do that:
portforward.com/eng…ute...
You'll also need to open that port on your software firewall, here's a guide for that:
portforward.com/eng…ute...

You can use Peer Guardian 2 to filter IP addresses of people who upload junk file bits and thus increase the amount of time it takes for you to download the full file (your client program has to download the junk, then sort through it and try to again to download the real thing, and possibly again and again):
phoenixlabs.org/pg2/

If you've chosen a port, forwarded it on your router, opened that port on your firewall, and patched your max half-open connections (tcpip.sys file), you're now ready to do a few speed tests and then follow the guides to change the uTorrent settings. Do a few speed tests and use your average results for upload/download speeds.
Speedtests:
speedtest.net/

My favorite guide is the one from Xtreme-source, and if you use uTorrent it's the only guide you'll need.
xtreme-source.com/tut…s-s...

Don't forget to restart your torrents after you've finished downloading and share for a while. It's good to share AT LEAST as much of a torrent as you've downloaded (1to1 ratio). People sharing is what makes torrents work.

Do you really have to do all of the above to get the best out of uTorrent?

I'd say the main thing is port forwarding, the rest is not necessary. If your really paranoid then I'd suggest installing peer guardian too.

The most important thing to set in utorrent is the maximum upload speed. If it maxes out it chokes the download.

and... use utorrent 1.6.1 ;-)

Nothing wrong with it but those in the know use 1.6 as their weapon of choice ;-)

lol. I had been looking for a private tracker and I had forgotten i had already signed up to demonoid. Thanks for the reminder.

Can I leave Vuse and uTorrent installed and test each to see which is best?

Or will this cause a problem with the 'ports' and my router?
