    Black ice is not nice

Seems a lot of people dont know how to drive when there is black ice. I saw several cars sliding all over the place this morning culminating in someone hitting the side of my car when they slid accross 3 lanes

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE! ITS NOT NICE ON THE ICE!

Even 30 was too fast for the roads this morning... :?

It amazes me how people think its ok to drive like they do on ice, Ok its fun but when there are other cars around you then you should use extra care.

Black ice is when the road and surrounding area looks fine but the road surface is like glass. So much so, you can barely stand on it. Hit it a few times, once on a motorway and it's leathel. Not much you can do if you come across it.
No excuse for any driver at the moment though, you can see the wintery conditions but some still drive as if theyre driving as normal. Madness.

yea i know im now off to garage to see if it needs re-tracking or a new stering rack and also 2 new wheels and that all i know of atm so take car people!!

I had to have a new rear axel many years ago. Was driving and thought I had a flat so touched the brake and the back end came spliding round. I just caught it, but slammed the rear end into the curb in the process. Got out the car thinking what had happened, only to find the road was sheet black ice. Tried warning another passing car to slow down but they just put their foot down thinking I was some crazy trying to car jack them.

Even with my car and the 3rd party car being parked in the left lane with hazzard lights on drivers were still driving really fast and some even sliding. Was worried a 3rd car would hit me. Also - one driver drove past and souted "staring at it wont fix it"... idiots. ;-)

Horrible unpredictable stuff to drive on, I wrote off a Rover on black ice luckily I was only doing about 10-12mph, I turned for a corner, the car didn't I ended up in in a ditch, I clambered out and was sat on a wall smoking a cig and pondering life and the universe.

Then the gritter drove past!!!! was fuming, but with hindsight I did the motoring world a favour 1 less 827 on the roads.

Yup - the only reason I was driving down the road I was on was due to the M27 being closed due to accident due to - you guessed it - black ice. :x

Girlfriend was going 10mph last night down the road to ASDA, and she slid about 15 metres!!

That's a bit of a generalisation. Most of the roads around here are covered in ice, the rain hasn't helped. This morning I had to do about 5mph on some of them. Went out with somebody else in a RWD Transit tipper around the time you posted and that was **** out all over the place.

aye plus the A2, A28, and M20 being closed because of fairly large horrid accidents

One of the problems with all the new fangled gizzmo's on new cars is that some drivers think their car is capable of being driven (and stoped) in any conditions.

Yep A28 towards Canterbury by the Golden Bull at about 7am (I was passing close by), M20 J10, the bloke I was working with span his car on the way in because some bloke had ended up off the road and proceeded to run out onto the motorway waving his arms  I went out at 5am and was ordered back to the yard at 8 due to the conditions. The pavements are worse though. The council wont grit them though as it makes them liable in case of an accident. A bit mad, but there you go.

yep had to do a few detours this morning around Sarre and Sturry

Interesting about the pavements not being gritted the Hospitals have gritted the paths otherwise they would get fined for not making it safe!?!

Well the council line is 'You were warned to stay inside'

You only create a liability if you are negligent in your actions. If you do nothing, you are not liable unless there is a byelaw in your area. If you do grit (or do anything else such as pour water onto the snow or ice) and act negligently, you could be liable.

    oh right

but still its sad the Council and the Hospitals can't work with each other, its easy to see the possible knock on effects of the Council's inaction, hey ho :whistling:

The relevant council would be liable regardless (though not liable for anything that is caused through negligence). The council would have to show that they have done everything reasonable to ensure pavements are safe.

Which is why they tell people not to go out unless absolutely necessary. If you ignore that advice you take on the risk. It's like being covered in petrol and somebody saying don't smoke. If you decide to ignore the advice and smoke then go up in flames it's not their fault. You were warned

Anyway, salting the pavements would melt the snow and ice which would then refreeze during the night making matters a LOT worse.

a white Christmas ain't what its cracked up to be then.............

can't spell nice without ice

Joking aside, the roads are pretty lethal, I would have to agree with you there.

I slid out of a road end this morning, thankfully no-one was coming otherwise i'd have been late for work and have a few bruises for christmas.

    ( I was doing approx 15-20mph, possibly slower )

Luckily it was only 4.25am :w00t:

i got chains on my tyres.

    Don't be so silly.

Remember to steer into the skid!! :-)

I am the first to admit that I am a terrible driver - I am the epitome of a 'female driver'!! So I just don't drive when it's like this. I am bad but I am not really unsafe - I adjust my stopping distance according to road conditions etc! It's mostly walls that need to panic when I am on the roads! Twice I have reversed into a wall. Damn work have made the car park reverse park only for health and safety reasons!!

Hmmm - that rule obviously hasnt worked. Sue them and then see them change the rule really quickly. :-D
