yes the age thing is answered on there, but you cannot donate if you have had blood since 1980, so im assuming this never changes cause thats like 29 years ago, sad those who recieve cannot donate

i think the answer is no you can't , if you have received. and it is sad you can't give back.

You are always 100% informed if you have received blood.

I would love to be able to donate but I cannot, as the result of the transfusion that I had, means that I have abnormal anti-K antibodies.
I will never forget that a blood donor saved my life and I will donate my body to research.

Just read the FAQ its because of vCJD or mad cows disease. They believe it may be transmitted through a blood transfusion. Don't know if they test for it now or what. They are just leaning towards the side of caution.

No you can't one you have had a blood transfusion you can never donate … No you can't one you have had a blood transfusion you can never donate again, FACT.

Agreed.

Neither of my sisters (Jaundice) or Dad (Malaria) can give blood either. Makes it even more important that those who can, do.

Been 2 years since I last did...... so this is a good reminder.

I can't give blood either.

So everyone make sure you donate in case I need some. Thanks:thumbsup:

I've given nearly 40 times and never had any after effects. Key thing is to drink (not alcohol) plenty afterwards to replenish your fluids. I have one arm (right - I'm right handed) where the veins are awkward (painful) to get at, so I always use the other arm now which is fine

You should also think about registering to be a bone marrow donor. They will take an extra sample of blood next time you donate but they only contact you if you are an exact match for someone which is rare.

I can't give blood because I had a transfusion 2 years ago, I will definitely give blood as soon as I can to pay back what I took

edit

Q Why are people who have or think they may have received a blood transfusion since 1980 no longer able to give blood?
A This step has been implemented by all four of the UK Blood Services on 2nd August 2004. It is a further precautionary measure against the possible risk of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) being transmitted by blood and blood products.

vCJD is thought to be the consequence of eating contaminated beef, related to BSE (or mad cow disease) in UK cattle after 1980. Fortunately, vCJD is very rare. But in late 2003, there was evidence that a blood donor transmitted vCJD to a patient, via transfusion. Scientists are not 100% sure that this is the case, as it is possible that both donor and patient acquired vCJD by eating contaminated beef.

It's not a nasty debate.

Blood stocks are running low and to ban people based on their sexuality and not their behaviour is a hangover from more prejudiced days.

In fact, it's rather prescient because there is a growing move towards allowing homosexuals to donate blood.

most of the intelligent will know why they are banned, and your posts are to incite the resons for this, and as you know it isnt because of their sexuality it what their sexuality involves, as does it with a women and man, look at the questions asked, this is my last post on this and if you continue i will report you and ask for your posts to be removed, if you wish to discuss it further make your own thread

This is a thread about blood donation - I gave you the website AND the phone number with all the info.

It's now evolving into an interesting debate and you think that's a bad thing?

Simple fact is that STIs aren't confined to the homosexual community and implying that they are is at best naive and at worst homophobic.

In America they are looking at changing the rules - that doesn't mean they aren't 'intelligent'.

Totally inaccurate comment but I suspect you know that anyway and are just trying to distort the thread as Sassie says.

But for the others who don't know - the ban IS based on behaviour - if you have sex with prostitutes, visit high risk countries, inject drugs, have recently had a peircing (ear nose etc) - all of these carry an increased risk and prevent you giving blood. No mention of sexuality there is there?

Question 12 - Are you a man who has had oral or **** sex with another man (even if you used a condom).

Why is there no question about whether or not you've had sex with a woman?

The closest is whether you've had sex with someone who might have AIDs/Hep.

FilthAndFurry;6255089

Because (as I'm sure you're already aware) the risks are much less.......and if they banned all hetero and homosexuals from giving blood doesn't leave many potential donors does it?

Carry on fishing but as Dino used to say "I'm out of here"..........

I'm not fishing. In fact, the FDA have made noises about changing it to reflect less prejudiced attitudes.

This thread is about whether sassie can give blood with her particular circumstances, homosexuality was never mentioned and I can see no reason why you had to hijack the thread to bring it up apart from starting an arguement.

If you want to have that discussion will you please start your own thread.

I apologise.

But I did provide Sassie with the answer in the first post, trying to be helpful.

In post 11, you can also see other people mentioning that they can't give blood for various reasons.

To a reasonable person, it would seem her question was answered and others were advancing the debate in a logical manner.

I get involved and apparently I'm 'fishing', by presenting facts and newsworthy information.

shame the thread ended like this, started off nice and friendly as well

there is a big red button at the top, you or filth can hit it and start your own thread about the practises of sexuality and why they are excluded from donating

funny why neither of you have yet ventured into why it is not allowed, just brinking on it for filth but then he his back from suspension but your not
