Ok, im getting a 720p T v for christmas and want to be able to watch blu-rays.

I could get a Blu-ray player or for a bit more a PS3. Im not too bothered about gaming on it because im a 360 player.

so which would be better to get?

is the PS3 loud when its on compared to a Blu-ray player and is there a difference in blu-ray quality and upscaling capability?

Thank You

ps3, it will have a 250gb hard drive and can download HD pictures.

and you can watch bbc iplayer on your tv via the ps3 for free.

The bluray, bbc I player really isn't that good. You can always hook a pc/laptop up to the tv anyway and watch 4OD, BBC I etc etc.... BBC iplayer will probably be on xbox eventually so not worth buying a PS3 just for HD pictures and this

You can also stream your media (films, music & photos) from your pc via wireless network if you have one or if you plug a memory stick with films, music & photos on it , it will play them. Also Sony updates the firmware of the ps3 so it is always the latest blu ray player wheras not all blu ray players have this ability. Then if children visit, you can keep them occupied with the games capability. It is really quite versitile. So get the PS3!

Sloth/Mod

If you are not bothered about gaming on it then get a Blu-Ray player...........much more reliable.

how will it have a better pic than the ps3 is that not rubbish is the only diffrence maybe loading times?

no , the ps3 will have better loading times , a dedicated blu ray player will have a better picture .

Read plenty of reviews before you buy

Also something to bare in mind , a standalone such as s360 is hackable , so you can watch multi region dvds , you cant do this on the ps3

i am really shocked by that

yea thats why sony make a ps3 for £300 , the BEST blu ray player in the world

Then they bring out stand alone blu ray players for up to £2000

yea im talking *****

what a tit

I had both, a PS3 and a Panasonic Blu Ray player.

Originally the PS3 was the cheapest way to get a descent Blu Ray Player but now that's not the case.

The picture is better on the Panasonic and is also fully updateable.

Sold the PS3 and kept the Panasonic Blu Ray player, kids play games on the 360.

A dedicated machine will always be better than a multi tasking machine.

If games aren't important then get a dedicated player, plenty of choice and cheaper than a PS3 in most cases.

BBC said they won't be any time soon because Microsoft want to charge for it (GOLD or maybe more).

so is the pic diffrence really that much diffrent?

ignore rudi. hes talking out his backside

pic quality is superb on the ps3

no idea what you mean by 'loud'!

your TV will actually downscale the ps3 1080p picture output

ps3 holds 80% of its value after 1 year

blu-ray player holds 30-40% of its value after 1 year

ps3 plays divx, photos, mp3s, dvd, bd etc

blu-ray player just plays bd.

you'd be mad to ignore a ps3

Well here are just a few comments from people on AV forums , which is a specialist site on av equipment

" Re: PS3 vs Stand Alone bd player
I just completed a back to back comparison of my ps3 and my pioneer lx71 player. I was a bit wary of doing it as I paid £500 for the player. Luckily there was clearly a world of difference, colours were more saturated and contrast was far better. A techy friend thought so too. I am really pleased. I just saw the pioneer for £352 in my local comet without box or remote. "

" Re: PS3 vs Stand Alone bd player
As far as i understand it, a single input on the screen, input one, was isf calibrated. This input is the only one I use as the HDMI from the amp goes to it.
I now have a ISF setting on the screen which I use all the time. It has its settings fixed so no one can fiddle.
In this setting, everything looks better then when the screen is on user or dynamic or pure or whatever.
When I switch the amp from the PS3 to the blueray, the same disc looks miles better. "

THIS IS FROM WHAT-HIFI

So far so impressive. What about quality? In essence, it's the same as before, which is to say very good for what it is.

Sure, in outright quality terms, the PS3's picture doesn't quite stand comparison with a cheaper dedicated BD player like Sony's BDP-S360: playing both Blu-rays and DVDs, you'll notice slight losses in clarity, low-light detail and stability.

But we think that's acceptable given the breath of the new console's abilities: in fairness, a dedicated Blu-ray player is lousy as a games console. So, five stars it is.

DOH! Did I say they were all 1080p or even mention ps3 games

The fact remains that the ops tv is 720p so I was correcting them when they kept mentioning upscaling capabilities of a ps3 / BR player. Get your info straight next time.

Couldnt agree more, picture quality is amazing and compared to a sharp bluray player and a sony £200 model id say the ps3 was easily equal, and better then the sharp player.
Think by loud means someone hasnt set up their tv correctly...

PS3 when it first came out was one of the cheapest and also one of the best bluray players, now i agree a standalone player will be much better if you plan on only playing blurays, but also do your homework on which player, as not all players are that good.
But if you might stream stuff from the internet, use iplayer, stream over network, play a couple of exclusives, then a ps3 is a very good choice.

I originally bought my ps3 as i sold my HD-DVD player and wanted Blu-Ray, and I am not disappointed, and to be honest the PS3 is just getting better with the updates, ie VidZone, iPlayer, then realised how much better it was at streaming over a network then the 360, especially as it has built in wireless too.

Damn you need to get a new set up if thats what you believe!

the ps3 is a cool machine don't get me wrong, its just not up to my needs for my cinema system and my need for a good blu ray/cinema experience.

AVForums does have many experts, many who spend thousands, and others even tens of thousands. However a comparasion of £500 player and a ps3 = two different ball parks!
Furthermore "user or dynamic or pure or whatever" the guy doesnt sound the most bright spark either...if youve had your TV ISF calibrated you would know your TV, and the rest of your equipment off by heart.

Furthermore: "the same disc looks miles better" but yet no further explanation of how! Clarity? Colour? Saturation? Contrast?

Furthermore, a stand alone player out of the box has very little to fiddle with, whereas the ps3 has many options to fiddle with to get the best image for your TV...thus who knows if he even set that up!

A huge PLUS for the PS3 that nobody seems to has mentioned is Streaming Divx, etc via PS3 Media Server or TVersity !

For flexibility go for a PS3 ......
