boiler cover similar to british gas homecare

Posted 4th Mar 2023
Hi, we have british gas homecare but the renewal price is around £150 more than the price that we paid last year. This equates to around £570 for the year. Is anyone aware of any good alternatives that charge less and provide similar service? Wanted to get cover for boiler, heating and plumbing. Many Thanks.

We used to be ripped off by homecare boiler cover every year, then 3 years ago we bought a brand spanking new Worcester Bosch boiler supplied and fitted for £1,500 from Boxt, it came with a 10 year parts and labour warranty as long as we have it serviced each year.
We pay £60 a year to have it serviced if you do the maths you'll often be better off buying a new boiler.

I Ditched British Gas years ago. Moved to AA for a few years until they shut down and sold everything off to Homeserve who were an absolute nightmare to deal with, so then went across to SSE Home services who have been spot on and continuously undercut the prices for BG Homecare.

SSE Are currently rebranding everything over to the OVO Brand so as a new customer that's who you would have to sign up with if you went with them. But I have only had positive experiences with them and would say they're worth looking into.

I've been with British Gas for years but I was always able to cancel and then re-sub until last year when I lost out on probably about £80 and I was really annoyed. This year I went with OVO or Corgi as it's known. I've yet to get any cashback but its half price for I think 6 months.
My combi is over 10 years old now anyway so I'm thinking about getting it replaced but I am hoping for some scheme so I can get it done as I own my own home and get no benefits, which would entitle me to do that.

Give them a call and negotiate the price down.

Other than that ask your local neighbours and friends to see if they can recommend an independent guy/company.

thanks. I gave them a call but they were adamant that they cannot bring the price down. They were very stubborn tbh. In the previous years I had managed to get the price down but have struggled to do so this year.

Our boiler is a Potterton (Baxi owned brand) so when the chap I had annually to service the boiler couldn't repair a fault and wanted to just replace it, I contacted Baxi to get an engineer out and they offered a plan that was the same price as the call out and cost of any parts. They replaced the expansion vessel that had split and I didn't need a new boiler, nor did I use the shyster that was charging me a hundred quid to give it a look over each year.

When the plan came to an end they offered me a discount (as they had already seen the boiler and knew it to be well maintained and working) and threw in a service as well. I think I am paying £23 a month, and the service was £100, so I'm more than happy with the deal. The boiler is now 10 years old and things will wear and, from the experience I had, it is better to have someone who knows the boiler look at it than some plumber from Yellow Pages who just wants a quick cash visit and see if they can get a couple fo grand out of you for a new boiler when you don't need one.

buy Home emergency cover with your home insurance. always has been cheaper for me 20-40 on top. some insurance company even throw this for free with home insurance.

We also have this, only paying £30 on top of normal insurance, no excess and up to £500 cover.
Have used a couple of times, now however noticed when the emergency plumbers come out(seems to be hit/miss whether you get a decent one) they bill the insurance a ridiculous amount
On the most recent call to them said i would get my own engineer(who actually is our boiler brand approved) and bill them, they agreed a bit more paperwork involved and you have to pay up front yourself
