    Boiler help needed

    Hi all,

So, I've just moved into a new flat (rented) and its all electrical heating etc. In the utility room there are switches for fan (I think something to do with the bathroom because the bathroom light won't turn on without the switch being on), Boiler and Boiler booster. I don't want to get massive bills so how much do the switches need to be left on (especially the boiler ones)? I only need heating for a shower or 2 a day and the washing up.

Would be so grateful for any help. Thank you

Yeah I think so. Above the washing machine. Guess there isn't much else it can be.

I would just put the boiler(not booster) switch on for "x" hours and see if it is enough.
It's impossible to say how long to leave them on for without knowing everything including your inside leg measurement.

Trial and error is the way forward.

Thank you. Maybe just overnight before I go to bed, then turn off when I go to work?

The hot water will have a stat on anyway and will switch the boiler off when the hot water is satisfied. Just because it's set to be on doesn't mean it will be running.

Oh right, so I could just leave it on then. Probs won't though. What does the 'Fan' Switch do exactly?

    And that should stay on?

I should probably clarify, I have NO clue in such matters. I'm dangerous living alone

It can stay on, doesn't it come on when you switch the light on?

You can leave the hot water on, but it will keep producing hot water throughout the day.

Yeah sorta. I haven't really figured it out yeah. Everything is brand shiny new so it's taking a while to get used to

The cylinder is lagged so yes it will top the hot water up throughout the day, but it's cheaper than heating a cylinder from stone cold.

If you want to save pennies on the electric you can simply open a window in the bathroom when it's in use and switch the extract off permanently.

no windows unfortunately. and the bathroom light won't go on unless the fan switch is on

if you are not at home all day i see little point leaving it on, it should take half an hour to an hour to heat a hot tank of water, so stick it on for an hour when you come in

Yeah you're right. Only just moved in so will do so over the next day or so. Its all electric and I NEVER use heating (I never get cold for some reason). Living room/kitchen, Bathroom, bedroom and hallway. Should I be expecting bills £100+ per month?

my leccy bills are about £100 a quarter, dont have elcectric heating or water, but do have an elctric oven and tumble dry everything as dont peg out, theres 3 of us here, so beds x 3 in dryer each week, towels, everyday clothese, etc,etc

take a reading and check in a few days time

I think the booster button gives the water a heat up for 1 hour:thinking:, so you could press that 1 hour before you shower(but if your shower is electric no need)

if its your house you could install the pre pay electric meter, thats what i put in and its really handy, top it up online and i spend about 6 quid a week.
if its a rented house the owner maybe would prefer the prepay electric.

We rent out a flat with a very similar system.
The tank has two switches on it (one boiler and one boiler booster).

Leaving the Boiler one all day seems to be the thing to do and only use the booster if you need extra hot water.
Electric systems seem to be far cheaper and electric bills for the flat I rent out are about £25 a month maximum.

    Hope that helps.

^^ I should hope they've got it fixed by now!
