Booking in abroad after flight arrives

Hello, last year we flew for the first time to Gerona in Spain and the plane got in just before midnight, by the time we got our bags and waited for the transfer and drove to the holiday park, it was around 2.30 am. Obviously, we got our keys and went straight to the accommodation (booking-in time was from 4 pm I think)- because of the time of our arrival, we had to pay for the previous day's accommodation so that we could get our keys straight away - no where to store our cases if we booked for the afternoon of our arrival.

Does anybody know if there is a way to get around not paying out for an extra day's accommodation (five of us) if we turned up very late at night again - are you able to stay at the airport for a while or do they clear you out? The holiday park we went to last year said they had no room to store luggage if we turned up early in the morning and didn't want to pay for the previous day. Looking at a hotel possibly this year (if we can find anything left!), do you know if they will store your bags if you turn up several hours early, and are you able to use their facilities until the room is ready, or not?

Has anybody actually turned up late morning at a holiday park on the first day of their holiday booking and been able to get in to their accommodation earlier than they say, perhaps check-in from 4 pm onwards (if you have not paid for the previous day's accommodation (when you were flying)? Hope this makes sense, any advice appreciated, thank you.

I haven"t heard of either a hotel or holiday park that will allow you to leave your luggage and use the facilities before a 4 pm check-in as technically you are not an official guest of the resort until you have received a room key. Why do you not get a later flight arriving after the 4pm check-in?

Its going to depend entirely on the individual premises. We've turned up to hotels early on occasion and been allowed to check in because the room was already ready, but that's like midday not 2 in the morning! It stands to reason as they could have used your room for someone else on that first night. We have turned up early hours to individual villas a couple of times and had discounts but that was by prior arrangement with the individual owners. I'd guess the bigger the place the more inflexible

You want use of a room for over 13 hours for free? Just pay up and stop being a skinflint or pay more for better flights to arrive at a more reasonable time.

I was mainly thinking about if you could use the facilities on-site and store luggage (if possible) if you turn up hours before the check-in time. Looking at the flights that I'm interested in from Bristol, none of them actually arrive at around 4 pm, so if we booked a morning flight and got to the site at around 11.30 am, we would have to hang around for several hours until 4 pm, unless we paid for the accommodation for the previous day.

some might allow for earcly check in, but chances are they wont. its to ensure your room has been cleaned.

Thank you for all the advice, however, spent ages looking around yesterday and there does not seem to be a lot of accommodation available at the moment for the Costa Brava area - was hoping to go back to L'Estartit but can't find anything at the moment, either a hotel/holiday park or private residence. Flights are really high at the moment - last year five of us went from the 27th August to 7th September (flying from Bristol to Gerona) and we paid about £36 each return (before taxes, etc). Booked those flights about 18 days before we went. This year for a return around the 26th August - 2nd September, it's around the £100+ mark (on average) each just for the return journey

A lot also let me in the room early as soon as it was ready. I wouldn't expect the room early (if they do it, that's great), but I'd expect a lot to store your luggage if you arrive early morning so you can go out for the day until checking in time.

That sounds good, the holiday camp in L'Estartit last year, were not able to look after luggage, however, perhaps a hotel might be able to, thank you.

hey soph, I always arrive early and have never had a problem?? we will be landing around 10.30 next week too. There is usually always somewhere to chuck your cases until your room is ready xx

Yeah that was what I was going to suggest. Most places allow you to leave the luggage if you arrive early. Why not look up a few online and contact them to enquiry if they allow this. Then just arrive and leave your luggage and go for a wander around the area for a few hours and get lunch.

I don't mind doing that as long as we can leave all of the suitcases - last year in Spain we stayed at a holiday park but they had a sign up saying luggage could not be stored before checking in, so if we can't get a late, cheap deal at a holiday park, we will try a hotel and ask first about the luggage if booking in early. Thank you.
