Boomerang Rentals 'hacked' - check your bank

Seems like Boomerang has suffered a big data leak, lots of their customers (existing and previous) reporting fraudulent transactions in their bank accounts. Reddit thread linked below

Damn, I knew using them would come back to haunt me.

Interesting. I signed up for a trial a few months ago and then cancelled it.

Last weekend had a call saying someone had attempted to spend £1085 online at Harrod's. I've been racking my brains all week trying to work out where it could have been, as I rarely use it, but couldn't place it. Now it all makes sense.

I presume you asked your wife during that week!

Funnily enough, I did give her a call straight away asking what she'd been up to!

I read this about a hour ago just had a call from llyods tsb fraud department saying suspicious transactions on my account £36 went out on o2 had to cancel my card

Yep, they took my credit card details and spent money on nike & timberland.

Sorted it all out the other day.

Did you not see this coming? Maybe you were facing the wrong way.

Bet they were gutted when then bank blocked that transaction for a carrier bag.

    Same thing for me.

Got a call on Monday from my bank saying someone had used my card 5 times topping up 3 different mobile accounts totalling £110. Got it refunded as well as getting a new card and pin sorted

Saw this on Reddit. Sure enough £40 in Tesco Mobile topups. Disputed the charges and had the number blocked.

Shame, as I like the company.

Got 2 o2 Pay and Go tops for £10 and £20 taken from TSB my account as well. Had to cancel my card. Pretty unhappy but glad to know how it happened.

Have now cancelled my boomerang subscription and will be taking my business elsewhere, which is a shame because i also liked the company.

that's the main problem with it when it comes to Games rentals they are pretty much the only game in town these days since Lovefilm stopped doing game rentals, just a shame that things have gone so wrong as this if found to have come from them could finish them off

    Just rang and cancelled cards...cheers.

    For me they spent:

    £50 at river island
    £89 at dorothy perkins
    £20 at hungry house
£35 at a medical centre in the US

The silver lining is Barclays blocked them all the transactions and contacted me at 5:30 yesterday morning!

£30 on O2 top ups last night. Got the card blocked within 10 minutes!

Why is it always phone top ups? That's the most boring thing I can think of

Because they check the card details are working by buying Top Ups before going in for the kill, and taking a larger amount

They have an easy re-sale value & can be used as fixed prices for trading for illegal substances.

Of course, buying items via your own credit card, then reporting the card details as being misused/stolen is just as bad!

£1.68 tester on iTunes, £175 on Nike.com and £150 on Timberlands; phone up Nike and they thanked me and stopped the order from leaving the warehouse, phone up Timberlands and they did the same; then I phone up Apple customer services who told me that they wouldn't do anything unless I got a Subpoena, even though I was just giving them a heads up.

Wow has anyone else signed up that's not had anything taken?Or am I just really lucky?

I didn't have anything taken either, but you should do the same as me and have your current card canceled.

Glad to hear. I already did last night

Luckily I changed banks after closing my account. Hope everyone finds resolution!

Thanks for this post. I canceled my card today my cousin and mate has had there card details stolen and money has been spent online. Hope boomerang sort this **** out.

Boomerang has just said this on there Facebook and Twitter.

Following an initial enquiry at the end of last week, we have had a number of customers raise concerns regarding fraudulent payment attempts on their card details that are also registered with us.

We are fully investigating this issue and have temporarily removed access to our website while this continues.

We have contacted our Payment Provider Sagepay and our Merchant Bank World Pay and neither have any reported concerns relating to us.

However, please be assured we are treating this with the utmost urgency and can provide more information on our findings as they become available.

If you have any concerns, please contact your card issuer.

We apologise for any inconvenience the removal of our site has caused and thank you for your patience as we continue to investigate further.

@Dehumanization - I've been a member for a good few months but haven't had any fraudulent activity. I still canceled my card though, better to be safe than sorry though!

Luckily didn't get hit, went to bank yesterday in person to check anyway ( paranoid ) , bank staff recommended i get a new card for 'just in case' and they checked my account etc, then was informed their was some sort of 'alert flag' for customers with boomerang accounts issued in last 24 hours!

yeah, this is turning out to be a mess : boomerang are still denying its on them (despite them saying their service is down, the payment servers are still up working and by neogaf/reddit comments its owned/run by 3rd party)

recommend keeping up to date on your bank/this thread/reddit/neogaf, have seen reports of users getting hit from 2 year old accounts
(shot themselves in the foot by never accepting paypal, so their are plenty of people that had boomerang as their single 'actual-card-number-transaction' piece of online shopping)
    ---
    even worse part ? :
Boomerang are terrible at account issues on a normal day, they are pretty well known for taking extra days to process when you've put your account into ' close before next payment' mode : turnaround for sending games back is usually 1-2 days, but changes to 2-5 funnily enough when cancelling :P

So be super careful if your cancelling your account over this , chances of you getting stiffed trying to return the games is high.

Its not something thats mentioned much on the site at all, but you are actually technically required to receive proof of posting from royal mail for any sort of losses to be not put on you ( not really as simple as 'get disc in envelope, flip round, pop in post box ! as it sounds' )
saw many a complaint over the last couple of years on reddit to this tone : a disc goes missing in someones first or second month of account, boomerang insta bill you £50-60 without authorization

:tho see plenty of people who have had accounts for a long time say they've never had issues with a game going missing and being billed for it at all : still worrying how ready/able they are/were to use someones card details without auth:

depressing that they are the only game in town for game rentals

We had 2 x £20 phone top ups, also still £98, cards blocked. How can they spend using card details, when you need a pin or the code of the back, or password over the internet?

Got 2 phone top-up attempts on the 4th - luckily I spotted their Facebook update to find out the source!

500 pound paying a debt collection company for the high court in london, and 120 pound paying a second fine.

    You getting it reported?
I'd imagine using stolen card details to pay off your debts is an even bigger no-no....

Same, some A******* used my credit card to transfer money over to Africa via a london wire transfer firm.

I can't check my online statement but does anyone reckon this has been going on for longer rather than the past week? signed up with them two months ago i think

My dodgy transactions were around the 7th-9th.

    Mine was 4th Jan.

it's a joke. I can't believe that our details would be hacked like this!

I just had my credit card company on the phone with a fraud alert, £195 put through on the card for two transactions today and they declined another £195 for the Nike Store. I used Boomerang early in December to buy a copy of Rayman Legends, pain in rear end now having to wait for a new card to be issued.

Just checked my statement for the first time in months, 9th January, £329 to GTECH, after a quick Google, turns out they sell Hoovers and Garden stuff, called bank, got told to call the company about it ( !! ), company verified my address was used as a billing address, couldn't tell me the shipping addy due to data protection etc, called bank back, cards cancelled, refund processing.

The hassle isn't really that much, I can pay cash for stuff for a few days till my card comes back, but it is just lucky that I had checked my statement.
