this was on the gadget show last week.
they think it will be in bars and coffee shops first

could be a problem when you put your phone or laptop on it - all your info gets downloaded and bingo - you're hacked/cloned and your identity stolen in seconds.

    i want one nowwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you imagine using the tabletop version for any length of time though? You'd end up with a bad back!

Would be great for RTS games though. ;-)

how much for a kidney I WANT 1

Microsoft demoed this last year, said that the computer would be in retail stores end of 2007...well its 2008? Be hell replacing a busted component in that thing.

It's not to do with just the multi-touch user interface, which as the report says, has been around for a long time (25 years or so), it's the combination of several different factors.

    Copied from wikipedia:

Microsoft notes four main components being important in Surface's interface: direct interaction, multi-touch contact, a multi-user experience, and object recognition.

Direct interaction refers to the user's ability to simply reach out and touch the interface of an application in order to interact with it, without the need for a mouse or keyboard. Multi-touch contact refers to the ability to have multiple contact points with an interface, unlike with a mouse, where there is only one cursor. Multi-user is a benefit of multi-touch -- several people can orient themselves on different sides of the surface to interact with an application simultaneously. Object recognition refers to the device's ability to recognize the presence and orientation of tagged objects placed on top of it.

The technology allows non-digital objects to be used as input devices. In one example, a normal paint brush was used to create a digital painting in the software. This is made possible by the fact that, in using cameras for input, the system does not rely on restrictive properties required of conventional touchscreen or touchpad devices such as the capacitance, electrical resistance, or temperature of the tool used (see Touchscreen).

The computer's "vision" is created by a near-infrared, 850-nanometer-wavelength LED light source aimed at the surface. When an object touches the tabletop, the light is reflected to multiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x 960, allowing it to sense, and react to items touching the tabletop.

you forgot to mention "and ipod is cheap deal extreme tat anyway"

    Surface spoof youtube.com/wat…nCY

Makes some good points about the system.

A bit of a misleading title there, at £2500 it's likely to be just a standard PC and a touchscreen with some new software.

but its not even new... its been around for nearly 1-2 years now! just in 'testing' phase

Problem with it is.. for all the cool features you need ceiling mounted cameras to recognise whats on it etc, lots of hassle and more things to go wrong

haha i saw a vid for that on youtube last year!?

i saw a short vid of this las year, i love the idea that you just place your phone on, drag the photo and its on.

    WOW! Lol

Actually, those cameras look like they're inside the body of the machine. Pause it at 1:48 ish and have another look.

It makes me wonder what screen technology they're using. If the cameras are inside then CRT and LCD seem like they're out and I didn't think projectors produced the sort of brightness needed for the daylight use a coffee table is going to get.

I thought it was a joke when I first seen it.
