I'm currently attempting to make my 1st loaf of bread.. The breadmaker is a Breville one and it is brand new. So I put all the ingredients in as per instructions, turn it on, and a little cloud of smoke comes out the top air vent that smells like electric fire. It's still on, the smoke has gone now, but it's not doing anything + I'm worried that it's broken and waiting for me to look away so it can catch fire!
Has anyone used these things and can you remember what it did on it's first go?
Occasionally there is a clicking noise, but again, doesn't look to be doing anything..
I'm thinking it could be '1st time use' smell, but it worries me that it's not done anything for last 10 minutes.. HELP!

I bought a Panasonic one last week and it did nothing like that. No smoke, weird noises or anything. Personally, I'd say you'd be better taking it back and getting a new one as what could happen if there was an electrical fault and you left it on whilst you were in bed just isn't worth thinking about :-(

Forgot to mention, it sitting there doing nothing is norm, as mine does that for about 40 mins on a basic bread cycle, but it's the smoke and smell part that would concern me

That'll teach me for trying to be more self-sustained!

I have a morphy richards breadmaker and it alsio gave off a fire smell when I first used it. As C&L said, they do ten to sit and do nothing for quite a while as they heat up quite slowly. Give it another 15 mins or so:)

Yes, I have a Panasonic, they don't seem to do much for quite long stretches if they are on an ordinary loaf option. I agree with Bitsey - keep an eye on it. I would have thought that an oven would be pretty fire-proof anyway but don't take any chances.

Mine turns a few inches, stops, few inches again, stops, carrys this on for a bit then it goes for it with the blade turning quite fast for a while, stops, turns fast again etc etc. I think the whole weird cycle of sit and do nothing then do a little bit is normal, but as I said before, the electrical smell would worry me. Wherever you bought it from should certainly exchange it based on what you've described.

Thanks guys! It's comforting to know that the 'sitting quietly looking mischievous' is normal! Was really starting to panic so you've helped put my mind at rest. I'm going to keep an eye on it and see what happens in next 15 mins! I'm hoping that the weird smell/smoke was just factory dust burning off the bits you can't wash..

It's turning constantly now, no smoke or fire smell, and starting to look and smell like dough! Got to be a good sign!

I think for the first few times I use this I'll make sure I'm in and awake, just until I learn what is 'normal' for these things.. If the electrical smell happens again then it's going back!

I managed to set my oven on fire once!

The only thing you have to watch out for at the end of the cycle is that you don't sit there and nibble away at most of the loaf.....it's really warm and yummy :-D

Didnt notice anything untowards on our Panasonic. Might be an idea to ring the company and ask if its meant to smell of fire and have smoke coming from it. That doesn't sound right at all. It might be working now, but you dont know this inital usage hasnt caused any damage (and shorten its lifespan.)

I have done this myself a few times and it gives a little puff of smoke and a not so nice burning smell as the flour gets burnt!

As a matter of fact it did! I pulled the tin out tho, wiped it with a kitchen roll and put the tin back in. I guess I might have missed a bit?

The loaf was a bit stodgy and only half the size of one you'd buy in the shops.. but seemed ok.
My lunch for work is made out of it so will let you know how it tastes!

Any suggestions for making the bread less heavy? I did put vitamin C soluble tablet in like I read somewhere.. Maybe I didn't put in enough yeast?

probably stodgy as you left it in the maker. it needs to be removed asap once finished so the moisture within it can evaporate when resting.

Yeah I had a feeling that might be the case. I'm gonna attempt another soon and will make sure i'm ready and waiting to take it out once done

Yes, it sort of collapses if it's left in - straight out and onto a wire tray to cool will keep it 'springy'. I don't add anything except the standard ingredients.

Nope! It is wholemeal granary bread with added fibre tho!
Maybe white would have been easier!

Oh yes, the more 'stuff' like grain, fibre and so on the denser (and smaller) it gets. I use usually about 500g white and 100g grain with malt - heathy, tasty and light!! Yours looks like it could be a bit chewy!! ;-)

Fab suggestion!
Came home and saw the thing sitting there and I couldn't resist trying it again.. Did 1.5 cups of plain flour, and 1 cup of granary.

This time... no puff of smoke, no odd electric smells.. and it started turning right away..
Do the different settings do different things in terms of when they start mixing? I assumed it would just be a time difference..

Also.. If I mix the flour type like mentioned, which setting should I use? White bread or granary?

I guess that it varies form make to make, but my Panasonic does variations on mixing, standing etc depending upon your selection. The manual should have the differences illustrated.
My daily loaf is the mix I mentioned on for the quick, two hour, cook. Just how we like it.
I would try out the proportions and the settings and see what comes out best. It's worth trying 2 parts white to 1 part granary on the ordinary white setting but with more granary, I would go for the granary setting. Does that make sense?
Anyway, I'm keen to see how the latest turns out.:thumbsup:

3rd attempt tonight - a bigger loaf but with chesso's idea of 2 parts white to 1 granary.. and with added sesame seeds!

(wish i was getting smaller - sigh - middle aged spread definitely taking grip... probably too much bread lol

my first attempt with a breadmaker and it got stuck and started smoking, panicked...added too much water and had to throw it away..2nd attempt going better! any tips for a kenwood? anyone use ready mixes?
