hi all my partner has just been made redundant after 19years in his job working as a hgv mechanic his bosses business is now closed due to high fuel prices and none payment from customers which are now in a simalar position.

sorry to hear about ur partner.......

I knew a recession was coming - we wont spend so prices drop meaning staff get cut and stores close meaning we get fired

    Dangerous circle

I suppose your alright if youra cop -doctor or fireman

Your partner should open their own garage

Yeh agree when i go shopping with my mum she spends at least £10 on fruit - bananas - oranges - satsumas -melons - strawberries -

The latter gets eaten by me but the rest goes mouldy and gets chucked

I went on my own the other day - got thick loaf of kingsmill - milk butter and ham and egss

I mostly blame the media. They devote countless news hours to how bad things are / will be. This inevitably means we all start buckling our belts in expectation which then draws us in to a viscious catch 22 situation.

cut personal spending = less company profits = staff cutbacks = benefit bill increases = tax bill increases = less personal income = cut personal spending

Sorry to hear about your partner. Kind of thing we see everyday now, sadly it looks as though it';s gonna get a lot worse in the coming weeks/months. :-(

Lower the interests rates and cut the down payment for houses so its like 5%

i think, we dont do anything about it.. I thought we should have had a big strike regarding the petrol, blocked the roads, and bought the local admin to their knees. See from my point, the govt charges a % tax on fuel, higher the price more money the govt makes. In other coutries the govt takes a set amount, say 38p per l of fuel. So the govt doesnt make any more or less if the price goes up. But our govt has been doing this, and now they make more money from the higher prices.. We should all do a flash mob or a slowdown or something.. do it everyday.. till Mr BRown gets stuck in a traffic Jam himself!!

Everything is more expensive.. and the worse is, it never gets cheaper. I remember when fuel was 78p a litre.. it went up and the govt said, oh it will come down in a few weeks... but has it.. Never.. Fuel will never go below 100p now.. ever!!

You are wrong on the main point here. duty rate in the UK is GBP£0.5035 per litre so isn't a fixed percentage. The VAT is the only percentage (17.5% added on top). Bizarrely, this means we in the UK are hit less than other countries in real percentage terms when the oil price rises.

fual will carry on the way it is bacause people still buy it, yes i know some cannot live without it, but some can, when their is a fual protest everyone either fills up the day before or the day after, so no less fual is actually purchased.

Is'nt the 0.5035£ duty on the fuel we pay at the pumps. I thought there was a percentage that was paid by the oil companies selling the fuel to the govt as well.
    I thought it was like

Profit for fuel comapny= Selling price (to local pumps or whatever)- (Cost of production+tax paid to govt (per barrel or something)

And then there is VAT and fuel tax paid by the pumps to the govt ie 17,5% vat and the £0.5035 paid per litre to the govt aswell.. I might be wrong.. !!
