Hi Guys

Has anyone used British Car Auctions and know what they charge private buyers?

Looking to buy a new car and thought I might give auctions a try. Any hints, tips and advise appreciated.

if you don't know about cars don't go or take someone who does

I would say you need to know a fair bit about cars to buy from an auction, jumping in without some knowledge may lead to god knows what.

BCA are a massive auction company, bought from them many times. I love the thrill of an auction.

Do your homework, know the going rate, don't look like a newbie, take someone with you who's mechanically minded, set a buying figure, stick to it no matter what happens. Be prepared to come away empty handed and don't think you have to buy the first time you go.

Go to a few first to get a feel before going with any intention of buying.
BCA fees have become a joke! They don't charge the large leasing companies to sell their vehicles. Instead they choose to rip off the buyer, especially the private buyer. For example the buyers premium on a £7500.00 car works out at around £425.00 on top of the hammer price.

However if your willing to spend around 4/5hrs a day x 4 auction day's you might just pickup a bargain.
Don't forget the rip off buyers premium!!!
Beware, do not buy from a car auction unless you are an experienced trader or you are accompanied by an experienced motor trader who has a traders account.

You can end up paying way over the odds at auctions and or buying a vehicle that has a major mechanical problem.

I would liken them to ebay in that way, they don't want every tom dick or kevin rocking up to buy one item. They want the big boys buying dozens at a time.

Probably costs a lot more to process and brings a whole heap of work sorting out private buyers over account holders with stored and verified data.

I think if you owned a large company eventually you'd go the same way.

Yeah that's true Greg, I know a guy who's a buyer for Carcraft, he will buy maybe 30 cars on a Tuesday and the same again on a Friday. Most of the time he's paying well over book because the companies making a massive killing on the finance side. So the private buyer stands very little chance these day's of bagging a bargain, particularly with the extortionate p/b fees

Ive bought 3 cars from BCA (Paddock Wood twice and Enfield) and got 3 really good deals. The buy fees weren't the levels they seem to be now though. £425 fee on a £7500 purchase? What a rip off!

I know someone who who went to Paddick Wood twice but alas he can no longer reply
Why do they charge buyers. I can understand charging the sellers as they are offering a service but why should the buyer be charged hundreds of pounds when the seller has paid a huge sum to sell his car. I must say that the cars sold in Camberley were generally of a high standard.
