£5,000! Been thinking of installing CH, but I'll avoid British Gas if that is what they charge just for a boiler.

yeah well apparently it doesnt help as i have no accessable outside wall, if i did you could knock about (wait for it) £500 off

The best of it is i only got a quote because i have a back boiler, nothing wrong wth it, woks brilliantly, 8 years old, but i have to have a massive air vent in lounge hence why house never warms up, only reason i got a qoute, better off spending the money on £5000 worth off gas to heat it 24 hours a day:w00t:

aah i see, still seems a bit steep though!

there are organisations that may help with various ways of heating issues, from providing free loft/cavity wall insulation to new boiler if needed i think, im sure someone here may be able to point you in the right direction

yes there is but as my boiler is ok i cannot get any help, i either pay to replace boiler or tolerate gale winds in house:oops:

I had a new boiler fitted yesterday. We paid £750 for the boiler, we decided not to buy the cheapest as it is has GOT to last us a good few years. Paid someone £250 to fit it and whoooo, new boiler!

Or Alternatively, sign up for the british gas five star scheme where you pay £15 or something a month and they are responsible for your boiler???

Just read your bit about your back boiler!

We had a back boiler, it has been in the house for 20 years and when we last had it serviced guy said it was great and would last another. Husband recently got a few bob of his mum and thats why we decided to change it. I wish now we had kept the back boiler as the condensing once is no quiter and radiators dont get as hot!

yep, already have that but if parts become unavailable it is no good as they will do nothing if boiler is older than 8 years, which mine is

Yeah thanks stacy, the boiler is fine just wish i de]idnt need this chuffin vent that continually freezes us out

i think i was editing mine whilst you were writing, read up about my back boiler, keep it I say Sassie!!!

I just cannot believ how BG are allowed to charge these prices:?

if you keep your back boiler, you can get back at them during the summer months and just use your emersion (or however you spell it) to heat your water! lol

When you use your immersiorn heater, it only uses electricity, so no use of Gas, which only works if they supply your gas and not electricity.

After getting BG to give me a quote for a central heating system, I bought a 'How to' type book from 'Which' magazine and some leaflets from Wickes and fitted it myself. I then got a Gas fitter to connect the boiler up ( I put it on the wall.

I spent a lot of the money I saved on some 'designer' rads.

oh i see, one small problem there i have my gas and elec from BG:w00t:

If i was replacing boiler to boiler in same space i think t would be easier and cheaper, but going from back boiler to new combi/condensor (although quote was for combi) i think it is because of repositioning and adding new pipes, blah, de blah, de blah

we moved our boiler ownstairs when we got the extention build. Got a new combi put in cost us about £800

our was that price because it was a replacement back into the same position. We had just come back from holiday to find the old (and it was only 5 years old) boiler had broken down and leaked water all over the electrics.......not budgeted for at all!

Rumour has it that some of the park keepers on Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve have been know to utter those words. :w00t:

CHRIST! 5 grand did i read that right:thinking:

I'm off to become a corgi registered gas installer:w00t:

Just get a 60" plasma and huddle around that during winter, double bonus:thumbsup:

British Gas more like British Gangsters. Good luck I shouldn't think you will be to hard pressed to get a better quote.

BG charge high prices, because they know that they kind of have a monopoly - relying on people's fears of central heating failing and getting huge bills to fix it. So people know that they'll get a quality service and job from them and cover in the future.
We had a really old boiler ripped out last year and replaced with a fancy new condesing boiler - job required removal of old boiler, cold water tanks in loft and relocating of new boiler to the kitchen + all new piping needed. We got a quote from BG and they wanted over £3500 to do it - we got a local guy (ex-BG) to do it and paid just over 2 grand for a very nice job, guarantee is also covered direct with Worcester too.
Shop around and get several quotes, but don't necessarily go with the cheapest!
