Broadand speeds - how to improve them?

We're on supposedly a 24MB line with Be Unlimited however we never really get speeds of more than 3.5MB.

The router we use is the standard freebie we got when we signed up with them a couple of years ago. Would changing this make much of a difference or is it more to do with the line itself?

Has anyone else had any experience with Be? Apparently they are the same company as O2 as we were looking to change over but were told it's not worth it as they are the same, but under a different branding.

i think you get about a tenth the quoted line speed, i am on 8mb and i get 800kbs max using forefox downloader

Probably depends on what you are trying to download. Not all locations can match the line speed you have!

I've been with Be for about 2 years. My Connection is 16.5mb and I get download speeds from usenet on about 1400-1500kBps not far short of the maximum I'd expect. Yet doing speedtests, I find it often comes up short - though us the one they recommend and Id imagine you see the speeds you would expect.

I think your right tbh, i'm on a virgin 2 meg connection, I've just done a speedtest on www.speedtest.net and i'm seeing download speeds of 2077 kb/s and upload of 243 kb/s so that would be consistent with 1/10 of the quoted speed

Dont confuse b with B !

Your 2 meg line is 2 mb not 2 MB

Sure you're not confusing Mbps (megabits per second) and KBps (kilobytes per second) there? A byte is 8-bits, so 800KBps is a good download rate on an 8Mbps connection

i have been with virgin for about 5 years and i never have had the full speed at which they advertise until they sent me a new wireless modem now i get the full 10meg that i pay for i dont understand why the i am now getting the full speed as the wirless router plugs into the old modem. Its a mystery to me but i am happy

i also run a program called cfos it seems to speed up my connection cfos.de/ind…htm

You can try it for free for 30 days or you can be a :pirate: and download it with a serial from torrent sites free if you dont mind being a :pirate:

Log into your Be router and look at your line attenuation, snr and synch speed, then post em here, o2 (telefonica) own Be, they use the same exchnage equipment, and are in fairness the best ADSL2+ out there

If its not a cable connection,,possibly your router is not adsl2 compatible which it would need to be for that speed connection
look for routers model number and check its spec against manuf web site to tell.

I doubt Be are gonna provide him with a router that can't handle the maximum speed possible on adsl2+

You can, at a premium. But again all the usual factors that can affect speed will come in

It's a Thomson Speedtouch 780 WL

Is that ADSL2 compatible?

The speeds on adsl line depend on how far from the exchange you are. That why all broadband providers say speeds up 2 say 8mbps because they won't guarantee you will get that speed i am with virgin supposed to get 2mb and i seem to get 18mb

Yeah it's ADSL2+ compatible, you know how to log into your router to get the line stats?

Yep, I am in. Anything particular I should be looking for?

Look for Line Attenuation or Line Loss, SNR (signal to noise ratio) and synch speed

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 26.0 / 43.0

43db line loss means your a bit of a distance from the exchange, not miles away but not on its doorstep

thanks for the advice on cfos, I installed it today and it has made a huge difference to my connection

I'm with Be and was advised to do a little tweak on their homepage and it has actually increased my speed, loads.

Log in to the be member bit.
On the page that it takes you to, scroll down until on the right hand side you see 'Profile change'
Select 'optimise for speed' and also make sure that 'gaming mode' is set to on.
Click on submit.

After that, my internet connection dropped for about 2 mins, but then connected again with no probs. You then have to log back into the Be homepage and go back to the same part and click on confirm changes if you are happy with what you've selected.

I found that this worked for me and gave me a massive jump in download speed

You are probably only going to see 7 meg as the max connection you can get on adsl2+ set router to adsl2+ mode , broadcom chip based modems /routers are better suited to the LLU Dslams in exchanges to achieve the fastest speeds.

Change your filter / your rj11 cable / make sure you are not running an extension from main insocket/faceplate to say somewhere like upstairs when your line comes in downstairs, so plug router into main box that comes into house from telegraph pole

im disapointed to hear the issues you are having with BE as i have wanted that sevice for some time now, i used to be with UKONLINE and noticed my downloads speed topped out at 700Kb/m but after changing the packet size it almost doubled in speed and could acheve download speed of 1.4M/b; although still not the 22MB/s as advertised it was still a vast improvement, somwher around 14-16MB/s, there are programs (free) that can do this for you and there is usualy a setting within your routers settings too, but i have moved from the city and now live at the coast where i have to take a buisness package jus to get a decent speed(8MB/s), ask your ISP what speed they would expect you to be getting?
