find out if its an ide or a sata drive and buy a drive caddy

    this one will do both

    amazon.co.uk/SHA…8-4

can get cheaper if you know which type it is

connector to usb for both sata and/or ide hdds
    ebay item #: 220611374096
    for £4.50 =]

(note requires ac power connector too)

External AC power needs to be used to supply power to SATA/IDE device (not included)

so it wont fire up 3.5 desktop drives just with usb power!

A hdd dock is def the best way to do this, but you need to find out whaty type of hdd you have as previously mentioned.http://www.laptopparts101.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/sata-ide-laptop-hard-drive.jpg

you will also need to change the permissions on the disk to allow the new administrator to read the files - its done by booting into safe mode - google and you will find some very good guides. You may also need to password reset software if your user name was passworded

The only real way is to open the case up and have a look, You maybe able to google your comps model number and find out, but its far easier to just open the case and have a quick look.

The cables connected to the hdd will also be totally different

cheers - thats quite easy to tell the difference so fingers crossed I'd even manage that one - ta

What's up with it - Is there no chance of getting it working again?

eBay item 280516770007 includes the power adaptor. I bought almost the same thing recently (but cheaper) and it's been a fantastic investment, handling everything through at it (some drives require jumper changes) and rock solid USB connection.

Or even eBay item 260611464653 (£5.21 including cables and adaptor but ships from China so 2½ week delivery)

sorry to but in OP... i never knew this was possible. i have an old desktop with all my sons baby photos on it and the tower just wont switch on, if i took the hard drive out and found out which one it was do i just have to buy one of those leads to move stuff from that to my laptop?

    yes.

    based on:

tower not switching on at all is extremely unlikely to be hard disk failure.
hard disk will prob work fine in new machine to pull data off (windows probably wont boot, but host machines OS will see the hard disk anyway.

    fab  thanks for replying

So if I got one of the lead things and connected it to my old hard drive, would I be able to transfer my itunes music as well as my photos?
