    Broken Hard Drive ...

    Hi folks,
And yep you guessed it by the subject title.. I've dropped my hard drive and now all it does is play a little jingle at me as it tries to spin...

I'm on the lookout for info about how to try and either get it fixed or try and get some of the info off of it.....

    Any help would be nice...

    Thanks

A dropped Hard drive will never work again. How much do you need your info? I haven't looked into it much but the last time I saw it was about £150 (couple yrs back)

(I can't find anyone giving a general pricing system - i think they charge it on the basis of the complexity of the job)
put some info in for these guys and they will quote you for the work. Good luck.

well if it isnt vital that you get data recovered off it i would recommend you go down that road because it is very expensive and there is no garrantee that the person will be able to recover all if any of the data off it. if i was you i would just be a bit gutted and just go out and buy another hard drive 4 a few squids. but what i do reccomend you do in the future is buy an external hard drive and back up your data quite regularly incase these things happen again.

Thanks for the help guys.. All I need first is to find out what was on the drive so I can then figure out if it's worth getting the data back...
    Is this possible ??

    Thanks

How badly is the drive damaged? Can you try to raid it or similar?

Is it your own drive? If so why don't you know if you have data worth saving? :\

Either way, try these guys: ]http//ww…htm

Yes it is my own drive but it was in an enclosure and all I used it for was for data storage.. Had so much on it that I can remember what was on it...

    Thanks

Normally, if drive is still recognized by BIOS, you might be able to transfer files off it (might need special s/w). If all it does is just clicking noise then the only way to get info off it is to use data recovery companies. AFAIR, they are charging 500-1000 quid per disk.

I think I'll just have to bin it and hope for the best....

thanks guys for all your help..

I take it you have checked on the maufacturers website to see if the hard drive is still under warranty...some have 5 year warranties so you may be able to get a replacement.

Yep that was the first thing I did....
Thanks but it's gone in the bin now...sob !!!

Warranty does not cover accidental damage...

have you tried taking the drive out of the enclosure and plugging it directly to your pc as a slave drive? I have done this many times as long as the disk spins it may read the data off of it, unless the fall broke the arm inside!!
