    Broken Toyota / Lexus key

    Hi guys,

I recently had the misfortune to break my car key (the casing) and to my anger and dismay toyota could not supply me with a new one. They put me in touch with a company who could supply me but at the price of £160!!!!! Which I couldn't afford, so after lots of phone calls, research and emails I finally found a supplier and the new key cost me just £10 + postage and packaging. So if anyone has the same problem as me or can see there car key rapidly deteriorating then message me - the company I brought it from are not retailers so I can't put the details online but I am happy to help anyone with the same prob. as me.

I would say this is more of a tip than a deal so sorry if i offend anyone by posting this here.

    Thanks x

It amazes me how much they can try ripping people off for a key that probably only cost 10p to make. Anyway nice gesture, Have some rep.

    What about programming and cutting?

Have just bought a Renault scenic car and starts with key card. I am worried that it could be easily damaged.

Was thinking of looking for spare batteries for it....before I need them

    Good tip

I was concerned about the programming and cutting but as long as you haven't lost the key you are alright. All you have to do is transfer the chip, buttons and key blade and hey presto! a brand new key - it took seconds to do and like magic worked instantly. He also said to me you can go to a locksmith or keycutter and they can copy the key blade for you. I am going to get it done this weekend - i thought this would be illegal but telephoned a few cobblers who do keys and they said its fine! I will be prepared now for any key mishaps!

They don't really break. You should keep a spare (decent) battery in the glove box however. If the remote fails, use the manual over-ride to get into the car and replace the battery. Hopefully you have 2 keys anyway. It costs no more or less to get a new one set up if you have a working spare key or not - so don't feel you need yet another just in case.

You can get replacements from DX and they cheap!! These keys have a compartment inside which comes out as one and will easily go onto another one!!

ebay, but make sure you get a proper make and not 100 x cheap ones. Manual over-ride is on the passenger side, remove the cap on the end of the door handle (it slides off I believe). The battery slot on the keycard has a backup key, slot it into the door and rotate. This will set off the alarm but allow you to access your spare battery etc.

    Cheers

 And how on earth would I notice the difference between dud and genuine replacement batteries on EBay :?

I just mean pick a seller using batteries like Maxell/Sony etc. - a brand you have heard of and are sold in individual packs. Lots of sellers will provide you with strips of 30 brandless batteries and that's not something I would suggest.

I have 3 original lexus keys for an RX300. They have all fractured & where the key blade has come away from the fob casing. Spoke to Lexus / Toyota. They have quoted me £250 per key. !!!! £750 for 3 keys which frankly is outrageous / can't afford and am totally unwilling to pay. Having studied a number of forums it is quite clear there is a design fault in the manufacturing of these keys. I understand you managed to get keys for £10. Please can you advise me from where ? Also what did you do about the programming of these keys. ??

    Many Thanks Tarquin
