I have signed up to BT and Sky and I am getting Sky broadband as it seems to be the cheapest I can get.

Now, after speaking with Sky they say I can only have the basic rate because my line is not capable of anything faster (this is a brand new building estate if this means anything) and therefore I just get the free net.

I'm a tad annoyed as 8mb would have been sufficient (i know i wouldn't have got the full speed). However, the speed is too slow for me and Virgin Media is not available.

Why don't Virgin seem to lay cable in new areas? It seems silly to me because I for one would have probbaly signed up to phone, TV and net and like others in my area they'll probably be on the lame ass speed as me and may want faster. Just seems to me that Virgin are losing out on potential customers.

Is there ANYWAY to get a faster speed? Sky tell me im connected to the closest exchange.

Thanks to anyone that may be able to help?

You're just going to have to wait until it's installed, only then will you know what your line is capable of.

Put your number in here and see what speed it says your line is capable of getting

Sky claimed I'd only be able to get 0.5mb - I switched to BT broadband and currently get 8mb :w00t:

Type you number in the little box in the corner.

BT used to have a checker but I can't find it on the site.

im curious have you ever done a speedtest ? also is is very clear that BT are one of those companies that throttle your bandwith !

i think you will find you will be in for a shock !

1) it depends on how close you are the exchange
2) it depends if sky actually has equipment in you exchange to allow them to offer you faster speeds.

You can use this to check if any company's have equipment in your exchange it will be these company's that will offer you the best prices and speed (unless its tiscali).

If its of any consolation i have a big green box out the front of my house, with cable lines being run directly by it, and i still cant get cable .... apparently they ran out a bit further up the road

Push sky i have sky and am currently at about 4meg also brand new astate. When my next door neighbour went to sky they told him he could only get 0.5mag even though he is only 20ft away from me. Pushed it with sky and now he too is on approx 4 meg.

thanks for the info. I gave sky another call and they still say I can have no faster. However, upon putting my details into 02 and bethere it seems I could have up to 8mb; sky simply say my line cannot handle that speed. Do you think they are lieing to me for whatever reason?

Remember line speed is largely dependent on your local telephone exchange and existing old cables, regardless of when/where any housing estate is built, however I would expect whichever telecommications company responsible for the area to future proof it by installing the latest technology, i.e. fibre optics for example.

But I also strong suggest pestering any ISP to provide faster and faster speeds, I'm with Tiscali, and upgraded my package from the 2MB package (which had been auto upgraded from 256k to 512k to 1MB to 2MB previously) to 8MB however I noticed that I wasn't getting above 512k. I emailed them, they gave me a few excuses, I kept emailing them with speed test figures and they eventually said they would investigate, and it turns out some idiot hadn't changed the network settings at their end.

Remember the customer is always right, don't be affraid to ask or complain, or even threaten to go somewhere else.

Are they saying they'll only put you on Base or Connect?

512 is " up to 8MB ", anything over 0 is " up to ", it is just sales speak.

You will only get what your line is capable of, with any provider, some do throttle speeds however, unless it is via LLU.
