A friend of mine who occasionally uses a few of the file sharing websites has just received a letter from Bt telling her that they have been monitoring her on the web, her downloads are illegal and she must immediately remove all the downloaded files from her PC or she will be cut off the interenet and could face imprisonment!
    Oh dear.....

How will she prove that she has removed them to avoid this sanction?

**WOW** Didn't know they do that!!

I use uTorrent 24/7 and will be,no matter what. Not with BT,most expensive and not the best service provider.

Not sure to be honest but she got the letter yesterday fron them. Maybe they mean remove all the file sharing programmes?
Still just thought I better warn anyone who's with Bt and does the file sharing stuff...

I think...I think...the operative word here is file sharing. If you use things like Torrents or LimeWire - basically anything where people can download off you as well - then they're clamping down. Hopefully it won't spread to newsgroups/Usenet, where technically you're not sharing! :-D

There's been talk for quite a while on clamping down on this so I think we will be hearing more and more similar stories .....

Write back saying their Infringing of her Privacy Rights. lol, Seems unfair that they can monitor what someones doing over the internet

Most people seem to blame it on a virus. If they was downloading through uTorrent (or similar) you can encrypt the traffic anyway.

edit: Homer, in the contract you sign you agree to not use the services BT Internet provide for illegal uses, thus if they suspect you are, they can monitor you.

what privacy issue? If someone is stupid enough to use unencyrpted torrents showing their IP address to anyone then what do they expect.
It's like walking up to a police station with a big sign around your neck with your name and address on, and stealing a police car!

It's quite possible the bpi or similar have contacted bt telling them

I suppose when she contacts them she will find out how they have been monitoring her. I know she uses Limewire and imesh, probably just uses the most appropraite one for whatever the download is.
Im with Bt and have used Limewire a few times for music...... maybe i should now eagerly await my BT letter in the post....:?

I presume the same way ssl newsgroups do, I don't use torrents but know there are encrypted ones out there. I'm not actually sure they stop your ip address being shown but they should stop your isp being able to easily see what you are doing.

Or is the person above just referring to the tick box to encrypt torrents within utorrent.

Peerguardian at least offers some protection.

    Your answer is unclear...

Was it the operating software or something you downloaded that corrupted your hard drive?

    What did you download?

What security and protection did you have for your hard drive at the time?

Still unclear, seems clear to me. I downloaded the client software AKA Grokster or Imesh. The program itself did something that corrupted it and just had Macafee on there, but this was a few years ago

I'm 95% sure that you can configure the likes of uTorrent to only ever use encryption for both communication and data. It might impact your speeds though as I'm sure there's clients out there incapable of encryption.

At the end of the day you agree to the ISP's terms and conditions so if they want to boot you it's well within their rights.

Does it really matter? There's plenty of other ISPs out there, only when they all start sending letters will there be a "bit of a problem".

Besides, encryption does nothing to stop prying eyes from actually seeing that you're active on a certain torrent; that's likely where PeerGuardian comes in. Even with that installed you can't be entirely sure that you aren't communicating with rogue machines.

So in summary.. the ONLY way to be sure that you won't get caught with your hand in the cookie jar is to uninstall your bittorrent client. By not doing so you accept the inevitable risks and waive the right to bitch when your internet is terminated.
