BT - New phone line connection charge - Advise needed

Hi,

I'm moving into a new bulid flat which doesnt already have a BT phone line installed and so I've been told I've got to pay a £122.33p connection charge!!

Does any one know if theres a way out of this charge or a way of installing a line myself coz I cant believe what they charge just for someone to connect some wires.

Also is there any possible cashback available for this?

Any help/advise would be great

Lol I got screwed by this, the only thing I can suggest is a letter to customer services which got me 3 months lin rental free...or if your getting sky they pay the connetion charge for you if you get broadband with them

You dont know its only a few wires, there could be an lot of work required to connect you which in many cases actually costs MORE than the amount that BT are charging you!

BT isnt a charity although so many people on this site seem to think it is so it has to charge for engineers to complete work so not a case of screwing people.

A bigger example by a utility screwing people is the gas connection charge that many people have to pay to connect to the main gas network but i dont see people moaning about that.

now now calm down...I am guessing you have worked for BT or know someone that has/is...as do I but, they claimed to have worked on my line when I moved in but when spoke to the open reach egineer when he truned up he said he hadnt had to do anything, but BT would still charge due to call out etc...hence My bitter struggle for compensation. however in this case if they are going to do some work the charge is applicable

We had to pay this, he was here for around 15minutes and they had to come back three times cos there kept being a fault on the line.

Most the work is done by the engineers at the exchange (Outreach). My lads just had to pay it, they change BT and BT change you. . .

When I shifted to my house, my landlord agreed with me to pay half of the charges for BT installation. I paid around £30 for the installation on an 18 months contract. I am sure the deal is still on. Alternatively, you can get sky to pay the installation charges as somebody else already mentioned. Best bet is to convince the landlord to pay the full installation cost of the line, as it will add value to his property- in case you are renting it.

Unfortunately the landlord has said he will not half the cost with me and so I told him that I will rip the BT socket out of the wall when I leave, tight ****, it was only going to benefit him n the long run.:thumbsup:

dont forget you will be tied in to a 12 month line rental contract when you reconnect

I joined Sky and added their free phonecalls, plus middle tier broadband so they took care of it for me for free. Lower line rental than BT too, but a BT Openworld engineer still came and corrected faults on the line without charge.

Just had a mate at work go through this, he wants orange to provide his service but they can't connect him.
He rang round and BT and Tiscali could connect him for the above price, i think tiscali was slightly cheaper.
Then a helpful lady at BT told him to try the post office.
Basically Bt charge you the full amount to cover all issues, when basically it is normally someone throwing a switch at the exchange.
The Post Office charge about £12 that includes only a 1 month contract, but then you are free to have which provider you like.
The PO did say that in the event of probs it could cost more, but that is done as and when they find any probs, rather than ripping you off up front.

Finally got it sorted, BT are going to reduce my connection charge from £122.33 to £29.35 because I've taken out a 18 month contract and the unlimited calls package. I also have to make 10 chargeable calls a month to qualify for the reduced rate. If I want to get out of the contract theres a £70 cancellation fee which if you add this to the connection charge its still cheaper than the standard rate.

I told you the same thing, but I didn't sign up for any unlimited calls. However, as they say an opportinist is the one who starts bathing when he falls into water, a tip for you in case you make international/ uk mobile calls have a look at my0870.com. BT offers 1000 minutes of calls to 0870/0845 numbers every month which cannot be used for indirect access numbers to make international calls, but my0870.com offers a way to do this. Exactly, people, including large companies, don't seem to understand. We are unlikely to ever win the word back though, sadly. I would compare it more to a hospital orderly to being a nurse or doctor or a bank teller/cashier calling themself a banker. I really hope that one day it becomes regulated like in the US or most of Europe.
