BT RIP OFF FOR ADDING NEW PHONE SOCKET

Found 1st Apr 2010
I was enquiring with BT as to how much it would be to get another phone socket installed in my spare bedroom.
This is their reply
"I can confirm that there will be charges of £ 71.52 including VAT for the extension socket and £ 127.99 including VAT for the engineers visit, if you wish to fix a new socket at your property and use the same telephone number."
How on earth can they charge that much...(nearly £200 ! ),
Think I will be better off just adding a long extension lead into the room.

just do it yourself - easy job and about £10

I used to work for BT they charge it so high cause they dont want to do it!
You could ask an electrican or you can do it yourself you can get all the stuff you need from wilkos.

Might try it myself, not very good at DIY though.
I need an extra socket so that I can plug sky into it,but might just use the extension lead to get a signal when sky engineers come then take out lead to see if that will work.

Have you got a free local paper? Theres always adverts in ours from ex Bt installers. Sockets fitted from £20-£30.

You've also been mis-quoted!! an extention is £199.71!!!! look in yellow pages you can get one for much much less, although if you develop a fault BT will not fix it.

I recently had all the phone cables and sockets replaced as my net connection was poor, and the wiring must have been in for over 30 years I didnt bother ringing BT as I knew there prices would be on the high side.

I spotted a BT woman working on the local exchange and asked her if she fancied a side job, she replaced all cables and 5 sockets for £80.

it is really easy to fit an extension - your phone cable has 3 coloured pairs - you only need one pair so it's really simple - all you need is a "kroning" tool ( or back of stanley blade ) and fit the colours into the same sockets on both ends and robert's your mother's brother

shhh its early! I read it too quick!

The price they have quoted you for is a new line not a new socket.

I just had a second line fitted and I paid similar to what you quoted.

Well I just paid £124.99 plus £24.95 for a new socket and an extension socket upstairs.

You only really need another phone extension if you are having Sky Multiroom, they do monitor that closely, a long extension lead would suffice.

They don't monitor it too closely then as i've been with sky for nearly 7 years and never had my boxes plugged into the phone line...

Had hd installed about a year ago and when the engineer came out he made an extension cable while he was here and just left it here when he was finished....he said nothing about it not being connected and have never had a letter from sky or anything.

Just cant wait to be rid of sky next week now

Has anyone here moved a master socket?

Got mine in the kitchen which is the stupidest place. Don't fancy paying extortionate bt prices.

Moving master socket is as easy as adding an extension.

Also sky only require you to have box plugged to phone line for first 12 month of your contract.

Been with sky a few years now so I'm good to go.

Is it straightforward with the new bt nte5a sockets?

I'm sure he's had the work done now, as this thread is 2 1/2 years old.
